Garmin watch. They sell very simple ones so you don't need to spend a crazy amount of money.
Or you can download the mapmyrun app on your phone if you don't mind carrying a phone.

Tracking Device for Running
I use the Map My Run app on my phone. It's set to tell me every .5 miles my distance and time for that half mile and my overall splits. I also like to run with my music so I motivate myself by saying "Ok, just 2 more songs…." stuff like that.

I usually use my garmin watch, but i use nike+ on my ipod as well. If I'm without either of those, I will run with my phone and use endomondo, but mapmyrun and nike+ have apps for phones too

I used to use mapmyrun. But now I finally started using my Garmin ( got it for Christmas)

I have a foot pod that I use for runs. For walks, I use the map my run app.
