Lengthening a Dress?

I am probably crazy for even considering this and i know I should just send it back, but I am so disappointed.

I ordered this dress from Modcloth and was obsessed with it for months until it came back in stock. I saw pics of it on people who reviewed it and it was perfect on them.
But on me, at 5'9", it is WAY too short. As in, barely covers my azz short. As in, you can't bend over short. As in, is it a tunic or a dress? short.

Reading the reviews again, now, most people who loved it were 5'5' and under.
Duh. I should have thought of that but I was just so in love with it.

I looked at the hem and there isn't much material in the hem to take down- maybe an inch, tops. It won't work.
What do you think about trying to find lace similar to what's at the drop waist or the hem and having it added to the bottom of the dress?
Do you think that could work?
I'm grasping at staws here but the dress looks SO cute on- except for my azz hanging out the back!

Lengthening a Dress?

It could work but just remember the lace part will be see through since you are not adding to the base of the dress.

If you have a good seamstress around I would go in and talk to them they can probably tell you what is possible

ETA - depending on the size if you do end up returning it I would buy it from you!!!!

Re: Lengthening a Dress?

I figure the fabric part is enough to cover me and the lace, if added, would be see through, but would just add enough length so it doesn't look so short, kwim? My undies or butt checks wouldn't be showing through that lace I don't think.
But again, I'm just tossing stuff around. I need to go see a seamstress and see if it's even worth the money.

The dress is a Medium. Fits pretty true to size I'd say. Other than the length.
But if you are like 5 6 or under I bet it would be fine on you.
If you look on their site you will see pictures of people who reviewed it- and on a shorter girl, it seems perfect.
Life of the Dinner Party Dress

I will let you know if I decide to keep it or not and if you want to buy it, that's great!

Def talk to a seamstress because if you don't need it to cover your butt and just add length for look I think it could totally be done. The lace piece looks kind of on the standard side so I think you could find something that looks similar enough.

I'm 5'1 so if you do decide to return it I will def take it and that way you don't have to worry about shipping.

Lengthening a Dress?

I'm a seamstress' daughter. While she's in Italy, I'll put in my 2 cents.Chat Icon
Get some lace that looks like the one at the waist. It can be the same width or wider, and replace the bottom lace with a Bigger, wider piece to lengthen the skirt. Or if it doesn't really match, you could do this at the bottom and change the lace at the waist to match too!

I was thinking this too. I think that would work well!

Wow! Never even knew these things existed but what a GREAT idea. Genius!
I actually ended up selling the dress to alli3131 today because I just didn't have the time to be running around looking for matching lace, finding a good seamstress etc.
But damn this is a GREAT idea and I am bookmarking that site for the future because at 5 9 I find my azz hanging out way too often. I swear they cut dresses shorter and shorter these days! Chat Icon
Thanks for this!

I am so excited for the dress to arrive!!!! I do feel bad that it was too short because I know you were so excited about it!!

I do agree that dresses are shorter these days. I find that even I have a hard time to fine work appropriate dresses and I am only 5'.

No problem!

I feel bad for you also because I am only 5'6" and I have this problem. I don't really like my legs, so I don't like wearing things much higher than my knee. Everything is cut SO SHORT these days!
