PSA - Releasing balloons
I keep seeing posts on FB and random other spots about releasing balloons, to honor someone who passed (a child), also gender reveals.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not release balloons into our environment! It makes me so sad that people who are trying to honor someone who passed or document a joyous occasion like a birth, choose to do this without realizing the consequences it has on our environment and wildlife!
*It is litering and pollutes our earth
*Latex takes forever to decompose
*It kills animals, they accidentally swallow the latex and die, the ribbons get tangled in flocks of birds...
Instead consider planting a tree, releasing ladybugs, releasing butterflies, a gender reveal cake (people love cake!).

I agree....we were at the beach the other day and some balloons floated overhead and I saw them drop into the ocean - too far out to retrieve them

Exactly! We are adults and would all choose cake over balloons! I am glad you all agree. I just hope it reaches some people who maybe didn't realize.

we were down by the water and we were cleaning up some garbage people left behind. my son found a balloon attached to a string still wrapped in seaweed. All I thought was what if that was an animal.

I went on a couple of whale watches through Viking Fleet out of Montauk and they stopped several times during the trip to take balloons out of the water!

I thought there was some kind of law about doing this. This is what comes up when you google it ; S 11-0331. Release of certain balloons prohibited.
1. No business, firm, corporation or association shall knowingly or intentionally release or cause to be released at any single outdoor celebration, promotional activity, sporting or other public event within a twenty-four hour period more than twenty-five balloons filled with helium or other substance which causes the balloon to rise or float in the atmosphere. This section shall not apply to:
(a) balloons which are used for the purpose of carrying scientific instrumentation during the performance of an experiment or testing procedure or by a person on behalf of a governmental agency or pursuant to a governmental contract for scientific or meteorological purposes; (b) hot air balloons that are recovered after launching; (c) balloons released indoors. explanation–matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. lbd00936-01-1
2. Notwithstanding subdivision one of this section, no business, firm, corporation, or association shall knowingly or intentionally cause to be released any balloons if such balloons:
(a) are made from metallized nylon, metallized plastic, or any foil-like substance; or (b) have any strings, ribbons, or other materials attached to them.
S 71-0929. Enforcement of section 11-0331 of this chapter. any violation of section 11-0331 of this chapter shall be punishable by a civil penalty of ten dollars for each balloon released in excess of the limits set forth in such section, not to exceed fifty thousand dollars.

I was at Robert Moses beach this weekend and saw a guy come out of the water carrying a tangled mess of balloons. One was a happy graduation one so I am guessing they weren't a balloon release per se, but people get careless after parties etc and they fly off. It's definitely a bad thing.
