Going UP the slide?
It always irks me to see kids going UP the slide when other kids clearly are at the top wanting to go DOWN. Well, recently, my 3 yo ds figured out how to go UP and wanted to practice his skills. Part of me thinks don't let him because that's not what the slide is intended for. The other part of me thinks to teach him that he can do it IF nobody is at the top, that kids going DOWN have priority, just like I'm teaching him not to go down until the bottom is clear.
What's your take?

Re: Going UP the slide?
i would let them go up as long as they know that if there is someone going down they go first.

Re: Going UP the slide?
they could get hurt by the kid coming down the slide. and im a stickler for the rules. so i teach her that she has to climb up a different way and can only go down the slide. but so many kids climb up it.

Going UP the slide?
I don't let my DS climb up the slide. I always tell him "up the ladder, down the slide". I know I have heard his day care teachers tell children to not go up the slide, so I try to be consistent so it's the same rule across the board.

Re: Going UP the slide?
One of my playground pet peeves! I don't allow my daughter to do it and she did it once at home (so she now knows she *can* do it) but she was told not to do it again or she'd be brought inside. Likewise, if she did it at a playground, we would leave (and she knows this). It's rude to the kids that use the slide the right way and have to wait at the top and dangerous for both parties if the kid at the top doesn't wait. Go climb the monkey bars!!

Going UP the slide?
It's my biggest playground pet peeve! It's dangerous and rude to other playgrounders. So I have taught my kids from the very beginning, "up the ladder, down the slide," like a PP said.

ditto to the daughter
But you know what I made it clear. You go up the slide you will get hurt, if you do, don't you dare whine to me. She slipped once and bent her hand back. I saw it hurt and resisted the urge to run over. She ran to me crying. I calmly said "you do NOT go up the slide, do you understand" and she nodded through tears. It was hard for me but she didn't do it again (that day).
She still goes up the slide, but she has always been the kid who would never do that if another child is on the top. She's the girl who will hold the hand of smaller children as they slide down and tell bigger kids to wait if a small one is in front of her. She's very cautious like that in playgrounds.
But going UP the slide is just a thing.
I redirect (if possible) to a climbing wall. Challenge is better there anyway.

This! I have 3 and I can't have my eyes on all of them at all times so I teach them the rules. We only slide down the slide never climb up.

I agree, it drives me nuts! My DS knows never to go up the slide because I have drilled it into his head, I honestly do not understand how parents allow (and watch) this while children are waiting to come down, it baffles me.

Re: Going UP the slide?
My son has been going up the slide since he was about 18 months old. Learned it from the other kids at the park. He still does it at 4, but mainly at home. He knows he isn't suppose to do it but he will do it every once in a while. He won't do it if someone is waiting to come down though.

Going UP the slide?
My son does it, but only when there is no one else using the slide. We started doing it when his PT suggested that it might help him with his low muscle tone.

Yes I am pretty laid back but I don't let DS go up the slide. My cousin's daughter sprained her arm doing this as her sister was sliding down. And another little boy in DS's class broke his leg on the slide recently. I get that kids do it, I did too. But I don't think it's safe and I stop DS whenever he tries it.

Re: Going UP the slide?
I never allow it, there are 50 other things my kids can climb on, and I don't think it's safe. I HATE seeing other kids do it and parents letting them. I'm an admitted helicopter parent and I really don't care

Re: Going UP the slide?
I think eventually someone is going to get hurt & probability is, it is the kid going up.
I tell my kids not to go up.
As for the kids going up, I figure they, or their parents will hopefully not learn the hard way! I know too many people whose kids were seriously hurt on playgrounds.

Going UP the slide?
I cant stand when kids do this esp. when kids are waiting to go down a slide. There is no climbing up slides rule in my house. Slides are for going down and not up and I tell DD that or my nephew everytime they try to do it.
I never allow it and never will and its probably because when I was 6 or 7 I climbed up a slide slipped and chipped my adult tooth and I have had to live with it since then (granted my parents go it fixed but there where time the fillings came out and all in all it was a big pain in the ass)

Re: Going UP the slide?
i always tell my son not to... its not fair to the kids that want to go down...the actual use for a slide...
I take him to parks that have climbing structures for climbing...

I think its annoying when kids do this. There are kids who are waiting to come down the slide the right way.
They can get hurt.
What if the kid coming down doesn't see the one coming up? This happens a lot on a round slide. A few weeks ago I saw one boy get his feet knocked out from under him as another child made her way down. He almost got flipped off the side and he had made it pretty close to the top.

Ditto. I only let my son go up the slide at the playground when there is no one else there. Otherwise it's down only and he knows it.
