Remove Old Siding- asbestos shingles

We are getting new siding and the company who is doing my house said we should remove the shingles that has the asbestos on it. My parents said I'm crazy for thinking we should remove it bc yes it has asbestos, but if it's left alone it's fine- and that we would be removing the existing insulation and our house would be warmer in the winter if we left it alone. My DH wants to remove it and I don't know what to do as I really don't know much about it. Should we remove it or just put the new siding on top? Also, did you remove it when u did ur siding?

My house has siding over the asbestos shingles. Why pay to remove them if you don't have too.

I'd just put it on top, as long as that's an option. Removing it is expensive. Keeping it is not dangerous as long as it's not breaking apart.

We also sided over our asbestos shingle. We were never advised by our contractor to remove them. I totally agree with your parents.

Totally agree. Asbestos is harmless if left alone and not disturbed. If you remove it it has to be done a VERY specific way and WILL cost you $$$.

If you are worried have someone? inspect them to make sure they are in tact and not causing any problem.

I would say that some things would affect my decision
-how thick the siding is
-what is under the asbestos
-the style and trim out of your windows

I do know that some houses I've seen where they've sided over the existing siding look funny. Its a combination of layers of siding, the insulation board, and how the windows are set. Hard to really describe, and I'm sure its not is all cases, but I've definitely seen houses where the look is "off" from having too much thickness to the siding with inset windows and trim.

When we reside our house we're going to remove it. Reason being we actually need the wood the actual side of the house replaced due to rot (poor construction of house & rain run off). Plus, I hate putting stuff on top of stuff. I want to see what's behind it & fix any problems there could be underneath...but that's just from my experience. It opens up a whole other can of worms, but it gets fixed.

Are you 100% sure that they are asbestos shingles or do they just look like them? I live in the historical district of my town so most of the homes within a few blocks are all mid to late 1800's that had their siding "upgraded" in the 40's and 50's. It all looks like asbestos siding but some of the neighbors have had theirs tested and for them it was just fiber cement siding with no asbestos. We don't own our house but plan on purchasing it and when we do we will test ours as well in order to figure out the best course of action regarding its removal. I'm a historian and renovating our house to as close as authentic as possible while still being energy efficient is very important to me so I research this a lot so when the time comes we are ready to roll lol. Every thing I read says don't layer the siding because of exactly what a PP said, you have no idea what is going on under that old siding and now you are just covering it up. There is one poster on here who had a horrible termite problem under her siding and you would have never known by looking at the outside, it was discovered when upgrading a window I think. Also, when you layer siding it creates a space for moisture to get in and just sit there which can cause horrible damage. Also, vinyl siding hangs from nails which will be put right through the asbestos shingles which cracks and disturbs them.

Re: Remove Old Siding- asbestos shingles

I would remove them. We resided our house last year and had them gut all the way down to the plywood, which was good because we were able to replace rotted areas and areas that there was no existing plywood. Yes, it cost us more money but in the end we now know the outside of our home is fully put together and safer, IMO

Ever since we bought our home, every time we do a home project, our motto is to rip everything down and start fresh.
