Hello all! I just discovered this forum and love hearing from everyone about their home experiences! I'm hoping you can help-we recently moved into a house that needs a TON of work! Originally I planned to complete interior projects first, but I now desperately want a deck. But I cannot believe the estimates I have received so far-16 by 16 size for 7500-8500 for wood, not composite! If composite it's $16k! Do those prices sound high?? Does anyone have a recommendation for decks???? I have scrolled through 25 pages of posts and haven't seen this topic lately. I did notice all of the Fernando raves and he is coming tomorrow for a patio estimate :). Thanks in advance!

Re: Deck

Honestly it sounds about right to me. DH added back steps and re painted ours a couple of years ago and it took him like a whole weekend just to do that non stop.

Wood and labor is expensive.

He picked up a few boards of wood for steps for our new front porch last weekend and it was close to $300.00.

If we were paying someone to do our porch it would easily be $20k plus so a deck would easily be AT LEAST half that.

He's a contractor btw so I know general prices.

I know there was someone who recently added a deck around their pool I believe. She had an issue with the contractor though, but maybe she can give you the range she paid.

I agree this quote sounds about right. DH is also a contractor and he said for that size and wood it would be anywhere between $8-9k so that quote seems in the average range

Thanks for your responses! Sooo if I'm calculating this correctly-a deck installed is more than $30/square foot? Some of the paver quotes are about 10-12$/square foot...I'm just surprised decks are that much more money than pavers. Plus add to that the cost of an architect for the permit and the increase in property taxes...not sure why anyone would choose a deck over paver patio???

Re: Deck

Ours was here when we moved in.

Plus it's a pretty big drop to the ground.

Personally, I enjoy the deck in the warm months because I feel like it's just an extension of my kitchen.

We spend a lot of time out there and it's great for entertaining.

With that said, you don't have to do everything at once.

You budget and plan like anything else.

This is why we are saving our kitchen till the very end.

We got a 10x10 trex deck a few yrs ago and it ran us 8500, I think a wood would have been 5500
