We had a very sad weekend...
I am still crying. We -spur of the moment - decided to get a 2nd dog. We went to the pet shop where we got Casey (no flames, please - I am really just looking for advice) and we fell in love with a beagle puppy. We brought him home, he got along with Casey and ,my 2 cats and when we put him to bed, he howled and howled. Then he finally fell asleep. In the morning when I went to walk Casey he was howling. Everytime I left him he did this. My DH and I both work during the day and we never had problems with Casey - she has no separation anxiety at all. But I just felt in my heart that it wasn't fair to this poor little guy...I pictured him crying all day and of course my neighbors getting upset. So I literally cried all of yesterday and my DH brought him back. The whole day we wanted to go get him again. Now I am crying again. Another thing is that we just got Casey to the point where she is much calmer, relaxes at night and we can leave her out of the crate for short periods while we go to the store. We just panicked and realized we have so much going on in our lives we weren't sure if we were ready for that again. Plus we are TTC and I am picturing myself being completely overwhelmed. It was a very rash decision.
Now I am telling myself i am an evil person and will this poor little guy wonder what happened to me? He followed me everywhere and slept in my lap. I feel awful. I feel like going and getting him back
Here's a link to his pic:

Re: We had a very sad weekend...
you know i love you, so i wont say anything about the pet shop thing BUT....
i honestly can not believe that htey took him back! pets are NOT disposable objects that can just be returned. puppies cry.. its what they do. they need to be taught.
BUT also... i do not know if you researched the breed or not (and i doubt the employees would tell you) but Beagles are VERY VERY vocal dogs!!!! Its in hteir breed. Perhaps you should research some breeds (or maybe take one of those online tests) and figure out which breed would be best suiting to your needs.
there are plenty of quiter breeds out there. i am sure you cn find a quieter one. (beagles are crazy howlers)
just dont get another dog on impluse.
i can imagine you are heartbroken right now and must feel guilty.. but dont worry, he is cute. he'll have a new home in no time.

Re: We had a very sad weekend...
Don't be too sad!!! It happens. I'm at the point where I could kill my beagle/pug mix because I am SO frustrated with him more often than not.
He has major separation anxiety too, but it's gotten better.
If you want a 2nd dog, take Jess' advice and research ALOT.

Re: We had a very sad weekend...
Jen, it's ok- we all make mistakes..
but Lolita is right- beagles are HUGE HOWLERS- very very very vocal..
I'm sure a 2nd dog is in your future- just make sure you don't do it on an impulse and research the breed- and please, please don't go to anymore pet stores, ok?
If you take the time to do some research, find a breeder, you'll be confident that you didn't make a rash decision... i promise.
