If you are an instructor?

Have you ever had to deal with a disruptive student?

There's a girl who goes to my yoga studio who is really disruptive and annoying.

I don't think it's totally related to the teachers not having any control.

It's not just me who noticed. A few of us were just discussing how she is like this in all of the classes.

Contemplating saying something to the studio but just wondered how this is generally handled.

Have you ever had to call someone out on their behavior? Chat Icon

Yes. And it's a tough situation. On one hand, this person is a paying customer, and you can't really tell them what to do. On the other hand, so it everyone else! And most people don't want someone disrupting their workout - especially in Yoga! It really depends on what they were doing what can be done. I'm sure the instructor is annoyed as well.
Where I work, we are not allowed to call someone out on being disruptive, we can however give general reminders that if you need to talk or answer your phone to please step out of the room the do so and then rejoin the class.
I usually remind people to "stay focused" and be respectful of others, before class begins.
At the end of the day, you are paying for a service, and if you're not happy with it - for whatever reason, I don't think it's wrong to say something.

I'm going to talk with some of the other students and maybe we can make a complaint as a group. She's just very inappropriate and I think could care less about what an instructor would say to her.

If you are an instructor?

I had a student with Asperger's Syndrome in a cardio kickboxing class I taught years ago. I spoke with him - for him, it was just him not realizing he was doing it. He was very high functioning, and wanted to do the right thing (I also happen to be an autism professional so I knew how to handle it) - weird how out of all classes he came to mine.

I am just curious though how someone can possibly be disruptive in a yoga class???? How is that possible? It's all quiet and dim and reflective... what is she doing???

My last class had two girls taking selfies and talking. This was in SPIN! Obviously they did not get the same benefits of class as everybody else. I was about to go quietly and tell them to stop when somebody else in class lousy made a joke about not being prepared for the paparazzi at class! Lol

I am not an instructor but have been in various classes: spin, cardio sculpt, to total body, boot camp, were the instructor would either call out the people durning class (happened in spin a few times) or make a general statement about the talking durning the class.
As a customer it is disturbing.

No she definitely doesn't have that kind of issue.

A personality disorder, perhaps. Chat Icon

I took a class once where I think the person had Tourette's or something and honestly, that didn't bother me at all.

She's more along the lines of the selfie girls LI mentioned.

Not a yoga instructor, but I've asked a member if they wanted to teach class (it wasn't the first time they'd been disruptive, and I'd spoken to them about it privately before specifically because other people in class found this person to be distracting). I've also stopped class to ask someone to stop talking.

It's really not fair to the other participants, especially in yoga.
