Give me the honest scoop on intramuscular injections......
So just went in for my IVF start bloodwork this morning. They will call this afternoon and if all is well (which I am assuming it will be), tonight will be my 1st injections. Because of my BMI, my injections (yes, all of them - ugh!) will be intramuscular. I will be mixing Gonal F with Menopur and the sodium chloride solution for 1 cocktail shot. I was told that having someone else inject me in the top butt area was the best. My IVF nurse even drew a bulls eye circle on me with a sharpie marker so its fool proof. Few questions....
1) How bad is this going to be? 2) I can either have DH do it when he gets home from work or drive to my mom's best friend's house who is a nurse and she said she would do it for me. Part of me loves the idea of having a nurse do it to ensure its done properly but part of me thinks this is something that just DH and I need to go through together. Thoughts? Advice? Helpful hints?

I did the pio and it wasn't that bad. The anxiety of waiting for dh to inject me was the worst part. Some people put a heating pad on the spot after.
I would alternate sides though, mainly bc the pio would clump up, but you won't get that with the gonal f, etc.

I injected myself with PIO. After reading about pio on here, I was nervous, but honestly the anticipation was worse than the shot. By the end of week one, I was injecting myself. I alternated sides. My nurse drew two boxes with sharpies and I would retrace them every few days.

PitterPatter11, how hard was it to inject yourself? I'm doing PIO this time and there will be days that I'll have to do it myself. Do you have to be total contortionist?

I will be doing this next cycle for first time. I'd rather inject myself then having to wait for SO or someone else. That's great idea with the boxes. I would need a focal point!! Dud you ice the area before injecting?

Re: Give me the honest scoop on intramuscular injections......
I agree, it really isn't bad. The problem with trying to do the injections yourself is that when you do an injection in your muscle, you are supposed to pull back on the syringe before injecting the solution. When you draw back, you are looking for blood. It is near impossible to check for blood when you do it yourself. My DH did not want to do it, but my IVF nurse and RE were adamant that someone do it for me for that reason. Maybe DH can go with you so the nurse can do it tonight and he can do it going forward?

I ice my back for like 5 minutes before the shot. It really isn't bad. I was suppose to do endometrin after my transfer but I prefer the pio IM shot.

If I am being totally honest, PIO hurts like a b!tch. I have huge welts and bruises on my ass. The first week or so isn't bad but after that, it is torture bc u run out of,spots to do and u inject on top of current bruises. At the end of the day though, u do what u have to do.

Give me the honest scoop on intramuscular injections......
I've had to do PIO on 2 different occassions. My husband did them for me ALL the time. The first time, I was in pain, I got these weird balls I could feel under the skin and it hurt to walk. The second time I did it, they weren't bad at all. Not sure if it's bc my husband was now a seasoned wannabe nurse but I didn't get the balls nor was I in any pain. I did do things differently the 2nd time around though - I didn't ice or heat the area - just cleaned it and made sure to RELAX. Relaxing was key, it made the needle go in WAY easier. Also, I read somewhere about wiggling your toes - if you do this, it prevents you from unconsciously tensing your muscle. Lastly, make sure that who ever gives you the shot massages it thoroughly into your muscle. Good luck! It's honestly not that bad!

You can definitely do it by yourself. I always checked to make sure there was no blood in the needle before I did the injection. I just did it in front of the mirror.
DH went away on business and I really had no other choice.

I never used ice. Instead I used the heating pad. I would heat for five minutes. Then I would inject. Then I would use the heating pad on the area and I would massage. I never had a lump.
