Did anyone not listen to Dr. Kofinas?

I went to see Doctor Kofinas as a friend went to him and successfully gave birth to a baby after several miscarriages. I had two successful pregnancies but suffered two miscarriages within six months and other miscarriage between the two healthy pregnancies. I sat down for my consultation and he told me that I suffer from a clotting disorder and also a mutation with the MTHFR gene. The continued to tell me that I would have to go onto lovenox shots for my entire pregnancy. I sort of knew this was coming based on my friend's diagnosis. He was rather short and to the point and my friend warned me of his lack of bedside manner. He did not sell me on his personality! They also went on to talk about the fact that I might have natural killer cells and I that I would have to be tested for that too!
I am still torn on what to do. I realize that he has saved many pregnancies but I am thinking that I might just surrender to the fact that I might not have a third baby. I don't know if I have it in me to take all of the shots and medicine.
I am thinking of ignoring his advice, just to take some of the vitamins that he suggested and cross my fingers if I do get pregnant again. Has anyone else taken this road?
I do not want to offend those who went with Dr. Kofinas. He has provided many miracles for many ladies.

i can't really answer your question b/c i followed what he told me to do down to every last detail and it brought me my son after 4 years of TTC and 3 awful miscarriages. but, i do want to tell you that he's a lot warmer than you think at first. yes, he is to the point and somewhat abrupt but he also will be your biggest cheerleader and cares deeply for every patient he has. when he sends you off to "go have your baby" at your last appointment, he gives you a big hug. he's actually very funny too once you get to know him. i wish you luck with your decision!

This. I haven't miscarried but without getting into too many details i was in a very high risk situation early in my pregnancy. I remember feeling the same way when I first met him but he definitely gets to know all his patients and warms up to them. We even joke around with him now. I follow everything he has prescribed for me and I 100% believe I would not be where I am today if it weren't for him. I am on lovenox too and it is overwhelming at times but you get into a routine and it become second nature. I love this doctor and have complete confidence in him. You should do what you feel comfortable with but I just wanted to add my two cents.

He doesn't give off the best first impression, but he is truly an amazing man. He is a very caring and warm doctor and, like a pp said, he sends you off with a big hug to have your miracle baby.

As for his protocols I'm a huge believer, this is my second pregnancy with him. I'm actually pregnant with twins because of him after going through IVF and failed FETs (including a chemical) with another doctor. I totally recommend seeing him.

Good luck with whatever you decide!! Chat Icon

im not TTC but after a tough time getting pregnant and 2 early m/c before my daughter was conceived via IVF, and then her pregnancy which started as twins, ended with a preemie delivery of one baby at 33w due to severe preeclampsia, HELLP and placenta accreta. i have decided before I TTC #2 to see him for a consult. i already did a ton of b/w. i was on lovenox for the first pregnancy among other things so i wont be surprised if he suggests that and intralipids or IVIG. im not going to him for sunshine and rainbows, im going to him because he believes he an eliminate pre-eclampsia from being a pregnancy issue entirely, even in high risk pregnancies. i have other doctors i see that are part of my emotional support system. but im looking for him to protect me from my highest risk factors. the ones that almost killed me and my daughter. if he can do that i dont care if he's the biggest a$$ in the world.

DO IT! He is not the most warm doctor but he is a miracle worker. His office staff---nurses, doctors, secretary -ANNA! I love them!!! Once you get to know him he will tell you his recipes, his religious traditions and even his house projects! If you want a baby intralipids and lovenox are NOTHING.

I didn't see Kofinas, but if you want my honest opinion - I would be so upset and regretful if I didn't listen to my doctor/ him and did not have the outcome I had hoped for.
Lovenox is not the end of the world. I've been taking it now for almost 8 and a half months, and it's super simple.
Why put yourself through more wondering and "what if"s - is my opinion. They are specialists for a reason.
Good luck

I never used him, but I've pretty much been on Lovenox during my pregnancies. It's not that bad a quick prefilled syringes. After a while it becomes routine. I am currently not doing an IVF cycle but plan to so in the mean time I am doing Coumadin (blood thinner meds) and will wean off in November to Baby Asprin then after my BFP back to Lovenox.

Don't let that deter you if you really want #3.

I had the same feelings as you when I first saw him! I was PG with triplets, was referred to him by my RE. left his office crying after our consult and blood work. Lost baby C at 9 weeks and that's when i fell in love with him. He was amazing. he kept my twins cooking until 32 weeks. I went into preterm labor a few times and I am convinced he saved my twins' lives. I would have delivered them at 21 weeks if it wasn't for him and his partner Dr Nyguen. I was on Lovenox my entire pregnancies. I would listen to everything he says, he really is a wonderful dr and his staff is amazing!! Had i not originally been PG with triplets I would never have been referred to him and who knows what would have happened. I credit that man with saving my babies.
