D&C - Please explain

Can someone please walk me through what happens when you have a D&C? I know what the doctors do (the scraping, the vacuuming, etc. :shudder:). But - will I be under general anesthesia or awake? How long does it all take? Does it hurt a lot afterwards? Do you bleed right away like you're having AF?

I found out recently that my pregnancy isn't viable. I'm 7 weeks. They want to do a D&C next week to see if they can get any info on why this pregnancy failed. Again. It's my fourth miscarriage in a year. Chat Icon

They knock you out. Personally, I prefer a D+C over a natural miscarriage (been through both unfortunately). IMO, a D+C is faster and les painful. I can't remember if I bled afterwards. Both times, AF came six weeks later. If u r on meds, u may want to ask about staying on them until the d+c???otherwise you will start to miscarry naturally and I think it's better if they can get the tissue and run the testing.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this again.

I am so sorry for your loss. I've had 4 mc's too and know all too well how hard this is. The worst part of a D&C is the emotional part. You are knocked out and will just cramp a little afterwards, but nothing too bad. I always went for a D&C because I wanted genetic testing done afterwards on the embryo.

Don't give up. I definitely am not either. There's a great book I read right after my last loss called Coming to Term that really helped. If you have any questions or need anything, please FM me. Chat Icon

I am sorry for your loss. I got pregnant on my own but had a missed miscarriage at 9w. I got a d&c and it was the best decision for me. The pre-surgical stuff and the waiting around was very annoying. The procedure took 20 and I was out under general anesthesia. I had no cramping after but took Advil as a precaution the first 2 days. I wore a panty liner for majority of the 10 days since I only had mild spotting. I got my AF 4 weeks after the procedure.
Make sure you take off the day of and the next. I felt fine but emotionally I needed to time to heal.
Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Chat Icon

I did stop the progesterone so the m/c might happen naturally. I wonder if I should keep on them for 2 more days, until I go back to the RE? I don't know, the idea of prolonging this and carrying it around longer than I have to sounds so awful to me.

You know I am so so sorry for your loss. :(

If you stopped the supps I would ask your dr about a game plan if you do mc naturally. I think you know my story but I was scheduled for a d&c so my doctor could do testing bc it also was a repeat loss but I ended up passing everything naturally in the bathroom at presurgical testing the fri before my d&c (scheduled for Monday). The physical mc wasn't bad but emotionally I had a meltdown bc I wanted them to be able to test to try to figure out the cause. TMI I scooped everything out of the toilet and then sat in the ER for 4 hours waiting for them to take it from me which was much worse than the mc itself. In retrospect I probably could have brought it to quest or something :( I wish I had known more in advance I was 1000% unprepared. They did find out it was a chromosomally abnormal pregnancy so I am glad I had the testing. I hope you can get some answers.

I'm so very sorry for loss. I had a D&C done in June of this year. They put you to sleep for the procedure. I was very crampy afterwards, but just took advil. It took about 5 1/2 to 6 weeks to get AF.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Luckily you are totally under for the entire procedure. I felt fine when I woke up, I actually asked the doctor when he was going to start even though it was over and I was in recovery. I hardly bled afterwards and didn't need any pain meds at all. I am so very sorry you are going through this again Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you all for your advice and your sympathy.

D&C is scheduled for Wednesday, if I make it til then. Praying I do so that I don't have to do the whole Ziploc Bag thing.
