closet systems

I have three bedrooms with closets that need updating. For now I am just focused on the master. The rest will come later.

I see do it yourself systems. I also see all the companies that will install a system designed for your closet. (my closets are not walk in, but spacious... the kind that says use all of this space well please :)

So here's the question.... are the companies outrageously expensive?

We're renting but I was willing to put a bit of money into our apartment so I was happy/comfortable here. We got a quote from California Closets and they were very reasonable. DH talked me out of it but I would definitely call them when we get a house.

Re: closet systems

I would call around and get prices. The quote I received from California closets was more than double than the company I ended up using. They were great but I am in NJ. I didn't do a closet, I did a wall system in the kids play room. He quoted me for my closet and it wasn't bad.

I would actually check out Ikea. They have really nice systems and they have a designer that will help you.

Re: closet systems

A few years ago, my husband re-did our master bedroom closet. We have a small walk-in -- it's definitely a walk in, but not super-spacious. I also wanted to organize it better and maximize the space.

My DH bought very nice looking dark wood closet organizer pieces from Lowe's -- he installed shelving, drawers, shoe cubbies, double-hung bars in certain sections. It looked really great (and would still look great if I kept up with the organization!), and I think it cost less than $400 for all of the pieces. It didn't take much for my DH to do it himself (in terms of time); he's reasonably handy, but I would think almost anyone could do it with the right tools.

I've heard a lot of quotes from professional companies are $1000-$2000 even for a small closet. But I would get some estimates first to see whether it's worth it to have a professional do it. I see a lot of closet company advertisements with discount coupons in local advertisement books (like the town crier and value-pak).

We used Alternative Closets and their price was great. I did 2 small closets and a double closet with floor based systems for under $800. I have also used the closet factory in the past. They were also great but not as competive, price-wise, as Alternative Closets.

Same here. We priced installing it ourselves and it was not worth it.

Another vote for Huntington Closets. I was very happy with them and thought they were pretty reasonable.
