Lunchbox inside backpack or one that straps to outside?

May be a silly question but I am not sure if I should get a backpack for my DC with clips for a lunchbox on the outside or if you just put the lunchbox on the inside of the bag.

I started on the inside and then my DS kept leaving his bottle open and it leaked. Soaked his math book. He didn't want it inside his bag anymore. So then I started clipping it on the outside. Well after a few month, he didn't want it on the outside because he was short and it was dragging so we started putting it inside his bag.

I would get a clip and have it just in case. His lunchbox didn't come with a clip but DH had one of those metal clips and that's what we used. I would do the same this year if he decides he wants it to hang from his book bag.

My daughter has a backpack where her lunchbox clips to the outside. I prefer that.......as a teacher ive had so many spills in backpacks because the lunchbox was in there.
