Re: Can your child tie his/her shoe?
My 5 year old is starting to kind of get it, but is not good. My 7 year old can't do it. But I admit I have not killed myself with it bc she had Velcro or slip ones.

Same here - but now he has cleats for sports and they are ties and he is getting annoyed that his mom still has to tie his shoe but is getting frustrated at the way I am trying to teach him it!

Re: Can your child tie his/her shoe?
DS is 8.5 and for the most part can tie his shoes. We started in the spring. It was hard for him and us because he is left handed and we are right handed so I felt like we were doing it backwards for him. He caught on though.
DD is 7 and has been doing it since 5.5/6. She is right handed.

Can your child tie his/her shoe?
My 5 yr old DD has been doing it since she was 4. I guess that's one of the benefits of daycare lol one of her friends taught her that and how to zipper her own jacket.

DS is only three so I'm not there yet, but I saw this video posted on Facebook the other day and thought it was a great idea for another way to teach kids to tie their shoes! Hope it helps! How to tie shoes

Re: Can your child tie his/her shoe?
My six year old learned this summer when he was 5. We used a jump rope around his legs to start and then we moved to sneakers.

DS is 6. He knows the steps but probably only succeeds in getting it tied right 1/2 the time (makes loops too big, pulls to fast, etc.) It's very frustrating for him.

My boys learned at 5. I taught them bunny ears style before starting kindergarten. Some kids get it quick, others don't. I had 3rd graders in my cub scout groups that were just getting it.

yes, since around 6. Thank god, its the hardest thing Ive had to teach so far bc while you can show them the steps, getting them to have the coordination down to do it is impossible!

Can your child tie his/her shoe?
My son was taught in school in kindergarten and it was actually part of his homework to learn how. Lucky for him we taught him before he started K so it was easy homework for him!

He's been in daycare since he was 8 weeks old.
How did he miss that benefit????
He could hold his own bottle as an infant AND zip his coat at a young age. Why couldn't he have a shoe tying friend???

That's a good idea!!! To get the mechanics!!! The laces are so narrow and short he cannot see the mechanics of the whole thing!!!
I am going to try this!!! Thank you!

Can your child tie his/her shoe?
DD can not tie her shoes. She is almost 8. She gets OT and they said it's really around 8 that they get the hang of it. We are will be focusing on that this year! : )
My niece though, who is 5 can tie her shoes like a champ! It really gets her brother (7) and my DD (7) mad lol.

Can your child tie his/her shoe?
My youngest could tie at 5, my oldest still cannot tie. There is an easy alternative way to tie floating around on the internet. I don't have the link handy, but will try to post it later. It's really genius!

Re: Can your child tie his/her shoe?
My SS didn't learn how to tie his shoes till he was 8yrs old. Till this day he will tuck his laces in his sneakers because he hates tying his shoes, he's going to be 17yrs old in a month lol. He just wasn't receptive to it.
My DS learned at 5yrs old this past April, he will be 6 in Oct. It was listed as one of those extras on his hwk sheet weekly in kindergarten. I tried in September epic fail, he just managed to learn how to do the first part and make the "bunny ears". We did practice on his dad's shoe. Then I tried again In January, still seemed like a pain so again took a break.
In April during Easter break, I was able to teach him in like an hour. I first used his dad's shoe, and didn't do the bunny ear loop around loop. I just used the method I learned where you wrap the lace around the loop and pull it through. This work like a charm instead of the whole bunny ears nonsense. It just clicked for him, then we did his shoe off and then tried with his shoe on.
My DS really wasn't grasping the bunny ears around the tree.. Lol
Mcds or ice cream or both may have been involved as a reward. I don't remember lol.

Re: Can your child tie his/her shoe?
Would you believe I don't really remember? I think they both had it down by last summer, summer before 1st grade. DD ties her sneakers every time she wears them. DS just keeps them tied and "slips" them on but he can do it.
Next time I see you on Sunday... KWIM? we should sit together and K and J will teach C before they go to RE... We won't be there next Sunday but will be the Sunday after that....

My DS does the same thing as does my SS and DH. I untie his shoes now so he has to practice tying it. It's only when he has gym but I want him to not forget and practice.
