All the super organized or just regular practical people, please come in

We just moved and the biggest problem I am facing is where the hell am I putting all this crap.

By far, my biggest issue is photos, photo albums, CD's and yes, cassette tapes. Obviously, I will not throw out photos and albums but what am I supposed to do with all these CD's and tapes? Can I throw them out? I feel oddly guilty about that. Where do you store them? Where do you store all your photos and albums? I have no furniture at this point so I don't have any book shelves to put them on.

Also, I have literally 15 totes full of baby clothes. I don't want to throw them out (well, secretly I would love to just so I don't have to look at them) because I'm hopeful for another. Since I don't have a crystal ball to see if that will happen and if it does if it will be another boy - although if I do toss them you KNOW it will be another boy if it happens- I have to keep it. I really don't have the storage space to store all of these bins. Any suggestions for a better way to store all of these clothes?

Thanks!

I would go through the clothing and see what is stained or did not hold up as well as you thought and either donate or toss it. As for keeping the clothing, how long will it be until you plan to try for number 2? I kept everything until I knew the sex of baby 2. Then I donated or gave away anything I could not use. I did store some items that I hoped my siblings could use. But 7 years later and my kids are the only ones in the extended family. I have recently given some things I was keeping for family away because who knows if or when they will have kids.

As for cds, either burn them to your hard drive or get spotify. I have one bin of favorite cds and tapes in a box. You could get a sleeve to get rid of all of the holders.

Donate the kids stuff to someone who really needs it right now.

It's worth more that way and honestly, most 2nd children end up getting more than enough new things anyway.

Pick out the clothes you love the most and wash them, fold them, and seal them in large vacuum bags. Makes them much easier to store because they take up much less space. Put the bags up on a shelf or even under the bed.

As for CDs, I took all of mine out of the cases and slipped the CDs into a big CD binder. Much easier to find what you want and again, takes up a lot less space then storing them in their cases. For more organization, sort the CDs within the binder according to music genre.

Cassette tapes.........I would toss. I threw out all of mine. They are kind of useless nowadays.

For your photos, I would buy a bunch of photo boxes, sort your photos into them, and label. Family, friends, holidays, birthdays, vacations, etc. This way if you ever get around to making albums it's easier to go through your pics if they are already sorted. Also, get some really pretty photo boxes so if you have any available open shelving in your home you can use them to decorate the shelves while organizing and storing your pics at the same time.

I agree with all of this.
As time consuming as it may be, go through all the bins. Get rid of anything stained, ripped, pilled, old looking, or anything you don't really love. If you DO have another baby and it IS a boy I'm sure you will get tons of clothes for gifts. You don't need every onesie and sleeper outfit saved. Hold on to your favorites or any of the more expensive thing like coats.

Thanks for the tips ladies. The pictures are the most daunting task and I haven't even printed the majority of my son's life.

For the time being, I put everything in the basement but I'm going to buy that vacuum sealer and go that route with the baby clothes I decide to keep. Thanks!

Why would you print all the pictures now? I understand keeping old photos, but if it is digital, why print it? We view pictures mostly on our devices. Print the ones you will frame and put out. Then, instead of spending money printing, find good systems to regularly back up your computer so you don't lose the digitals (like Apple's Time Machine/Time Capsule).

I agree with this except I feel guilty throwing out my cassette tapes too. so they are in a plastic box.

As for pictures -- I am in the process of sending mine to scan cafe and then tossing the printed photo. That is two large bins gone when I am done with that project!
