I like Helena a lot. Ella is cute but to me is a nickname and not a full name. I also think just straight Ellen is nice too.
My DD'S middle name is Helena after her great grandmother.

Thanks everyone! Funnily enough, I have asked for opinions from friends & co workers and they have ALL said to stick with Ellen because of how timeless and pretty it is. We may end up just using that, we love the name, just thought it was to old fashioned. I see old fashioned names are making a comeback though.

I think Ellen is such a pretty name, it isn't used a lot today but is so pretty, also with the trend of older names back in fashion (Sophia, Eleanor, Ava etc.) it works. I also like Tiger Woods ex wires name Elin (pronounced E-LYNN)

I know it's personal preference but Ellen just reminds me of Ellen Degeneres or even Ellen Barkin too much. It sounds matronly to me to be honest.

I like Elle. It was on our list but another old traditional name won out. Ellie for nickname.
I've always preferred Elle. There's a lot of Bellas, Isabellas, Gabriellas, and I like that Elle was different.

I'll suggest my DD's name as a different variation: Nella (It is listed under variations for Helen, along with Nellie and some others. Ellen is a variation of Helen- or vice versa.)
My grandmother is Helen. My mother is Ellen. My middle name is Ellyn. I wanted to continue the tradition.
As an aside, my DS is Daniel. So my children are Daniel and Nella.

LOVE Ellen! So much so that years ago, I dropped my first name and went with my middle (Ellen..surprise!!). Elle and Ella are wayyy to poular right now.
