bad policy?
went to a new-ish local place for dinner (small place); there was a table for 4 open. we were a party of 2. they wouldn't seat us at the 4 table because "we have no 2 person tables right now and we're going to get busy tonight, so you can wait at the bar".
we walked out. we were hungry.
is this policy the norm?

I think this is ridiculous of them. It's not like it was a table for 6 or 8. DH and I get seated at 4 tops almost all the time, even if the place is crowded or has a wait. You take the customers there, not the ones you anticipate.

Re: bad policy?
In a small place, I've experienced this before. I don't like it nor do I think it should be the norm. They should have all 2 person tables if that is the case and then just put 2 together when they need 4.

I've had the same thing happen. I really wanted to eat there, so we stayed, but DH was not a happy camper about it. Other parties of 2 were turned away while we were there. And a party of 4 did not come in the whole time we were there - so they lost business and created bad feelings for customers

Re: bad policy?
I think it's bad policy.
For all they knew you could have had a really expenskve order and left a great tip.
I waitressed many years and large parties definitely did not mean larger bill/tip.
What if it was a couple with two toddlers?
I also would have asked to speak with the manager if you didn't already.
Sometimes they have these young kids hostessing that are clueless.

I have come across this, except we had a party of 3, and wanted a booth (bad back), and they told me no, we need at least 4 people to sit in a booth. Needless to say we haven't been back there, I was completely turned off!
