Postpartum depression doctor recs?
My son is almost 11 months old, and I guess I've been in denial for a long time but I think I have postpartum depression and anxiety. At this point it's having an extremely negative effect on my marriage. I just feel like I'm going through the motions with life. I'm not happy, I don't know what would make me happy which leads to the worst possible negative thoughts - what's the point? nobody would miss me, etc., etc.
Now the act of finding a doctor is making me anxious and overwhelmed. My husband took the initiative to call my doctor, but the place he referred us to doesn't accept insurance and it costs $500 upfront if you can believe that. I'd prefer to meet with a woman who has experience with postpartum depression and women's issues, and can prescribe (because I probably need to be medicated).
Well I'm reaching out to you ladies because I don't know who else to ask or where to start with this list. I live in the Mineola/Garden City area. Thanks in advance.

Postpartum depression doctor recs?
First of all, hugs! I wish I could be more help, but if you dont get any suggestions here, definitely to go back to your Dr again and ask for a referral to a woman. The Dr should be able to give you more than just the 1 option that he gave you. Also applauding you for recognizing that you need some help to get you through this. And while I dont know you I absolutely know that your 11 month old son would miss you!

Re: Postpartum depression doctor recs?
Thank you for the kind response. I have that thought way too frequently - that he won't miss me.
Many months ago I went to one support group and then didn't stick with it, because you know, denial! I reached out to the group leader as well hoping she can give me some recommendations. I made an appointment with someone, but it's 2 weeks away. I'm hoping I can find another doctor who has availability sooner than that.

First off, I totally applaud you for recognizing that you need help.
I completely agree with the above poster. Go back to your doctor and ask for a female doctor recommendation. They should be able to help. Or better yet, I'm hoping some of the other ladies on here can help you out with a recommendation.
As the other poster so eloquently said, I don't know you but I can 100% guarantee that your 11 month old would miss you. You're going through a tough time and once you find the help you need you will feel tons better.

I don't have a rec, but have you looked on postpartumny.org? Seems to be a good resource, and they do list therapist specializing in PPD by county: Postpartumny.org
Hang in there and good luck! You're very brave for seeking help.

Re: Postpartum depression doctor recs?
Olivia pinsley (psychologist) and Almas nazir (psychiatrist). Both in great neck. I used them for general anxiety but know someone who used them for ppd to great success. Good luck!

Re: Postpartum depression doctor recs?
No recs- I live out of state.
However, I had post Partum depression and anxiety after my first son. I felt a lot like you describe. I went to therapy when he was about a year old. It helped a lot!!! So much so, i felt like my old self in a few months. There is help out there.
I had another son two years later, and was so nervous about getting ppd again, but it didn't happen.
All the best to you

Thank you, it's reassuring to hear that it can get better even though it seems like an impossibility right now. It's certainly not easy to feel optimistic when you're feeling depressed/anxious to begin with - what if it doesn't work? it won't work, why am I bothering? and so on... it's a vicious cycle. Thanks again.

Thank you. I did check that site out and am hoping to get an appointment with one of the providers that accepts my insurance. Someone else here recommended her as well. Fingers crossed...

Postpartum depression doctor recs?
I would start with your OB, they can definitely prescribe something but I'd look for an In network therapist as well. Good luck and many

Re: Postpartum depression doctor recs?
I am so sorry that you are going through this. I remember when I had my son, I had a tough time at first too. We had just moved out of our apartment and into a new house three weeks before DS was born. That alone was a tough adjustment. Then, when I had DS, I had a really tough time breastfeeding him and I just felt like such a failure. I reached out to my therapist for help and she was wonderful. She is a CSW in Garden City. I am not sure if you are looking for a social worker though. Her name is Susanna Preuss (I can get you her number if you want it). I know that it’s difficult to believe right now, but things will and do get better. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Support is everything! HUGS

Postpartum depression doctor recs?
Would like to suggest asking your babies pediatrician.. I had post partum blues and was in tears and my sons pediatricsn said she could refer me for counseling and Meds if needed ..(dr Elissa Rubin)
walking when the sun is out everyday for sometime they say its helpful and definitely seek help.. Do you have family that you like who could help you maybe with the baby too..so you have some time for yourself.. Having a child while wonderful is also stressful and the sleepless nights catch up to us I hope you get the help needed and feel better
