NYCDOE Maternity Question

I am a new teacher in the NYCDOE, and my husband and I are planning to start trying for a baby in a few months. I am , however, really worried about losing my job. What are the rules as far as maternity leave if I am an untenured teacher? Is my job safe if I only take 6 weeks and go right back? Or can they decide to excess me no matter what?

For instance, if I was due Feb. 1 of next year, would I be able to take 6 weeks, and come back in mid-april to take my job back? Or can the school keep the sub in my place and put me in the excess system right then and there?

I wasn't tenured when I took maternity leave. I had a c-section, so I was given 8 weeks. I decided to take an additional 4 weeks (12 total) filing through FMLA.

I am still at the same school... In the same position. My tenure date was altered slightly... By a month to be exact, but other than that nothing changed.

NYCDOE Maternity Question

Fmla protects your job. You will 100% be able to come back to your job after 12 weeks. They can excess you after the year ends - but that goes for any teacher.
