Anyone use a Advocate for CSE? How does that work?

Anyone use a Advocate for CSE? How does that work?
First off, how much does that cost to hire a special advocate? What do they do? Why would it be worth it?

I believe the advocates range from a few hundred - to low thousands. Then again, it really depends on how much you use them. Some cost more then others. Selecting an advocate based on your needs is important. Some advocates have specialty areas. (particular diagnosis, the type of support a child may need, etc). You may also want to see if your school district has a SEPTA or some sort of facebook group that the parents of the special needs children post in. My district has some very knowledgeable parents who volunteer to help you through a CSE meeting.
It's worth using an advocate when you are interested in receiving something costly. If out of school placement is at stake, this could be a beneficial time for an advocate because obviously it could be the less expensive route. It also depends on your CSE, some are much more supportive of the children/families and others have the opposite reputation. Some advocates know the laws more then the committee chairs etc. Using an advocate can help you, as they are not emotionally involved can see things a bit clearer.

I s=did for my son... It was worth every penny.. Even with his autism diagnosis, my SD was turning him down for services. He has been getting them since he was 22 months old... He just turned 5 and started Kindergarten.. The advocate got him into a self contained class and he is thriving... I never would have been able to handle it on my own..

This exactly. Just make sure you interview your advocate and get recommendations because there are some great ones and some not so great ones out there. Bringing an advocate that is not fully on top of their game can hurt more than help.
While I have never used an advocate in my own meetings, I do have one "on retainer" that I bounce ideas off of. The amount of knowledge some advocates have is outstanding. Good luck!
