new here... long

Hi all,

DS is 3.5 and has always been hyper. We never really thought much of it and he was always good at daycare until preschool class in Sept.

We moved to our new home in Sept also so we thought maybe his new behaviors (hitting, pulling hair, and refusing to participate in activities) were just transition. He always had trouble with transition.

So... fast forward a few weeks and what they are telling us at daycare is making sense with stuff he has always done at home. Seemingly ignoring his name being called, yelling for no reason, obsessing over certain items. More and more clearly it seemed he is having trouble with pragmatic language. He has so many words, but never tells his how he feels or what he thinks...

So I get an eval going and so far they think he is ASD. I thought he was more ADHD as my nephew is and a lot of his behaviors are the same, but either way it has just hit me like a ton of bricks.

The daycare teacher had a checklist from the psychlogist to complete and it said sometimes the other kids do not like DS. I cried so hard when I read this, he is so loving and so fun.

I feel like I am in limbo waiting for his speech eval, ot eval, and his FBA.

This is the hard part I feel.....dealing with the process and not knowing what to expect.

You and he will be fine though.

Sorry you are going thru this. Since your son has had problems with transition, did you ever have him in early intervention???

no the issue with transition was only when he moved to a new classroom and it was like 2 semi rough weeks. None of his earlier teachers ever suggested having him evaluated and frankly they never suggested any of the issues he is having now. I am told they saw it, but never told me or DH. I am annoyed about that, but can't go backwards...

Ped never felt he needed an eval either so now as here we are

I don't think most people understand ASD, and it presents differently in different people, so I think it's hard to determine at a young age what's going on.

Don't worry about the past. You are doing what you need to do now to get him the help he needs. And I know it's upset to hear about what the other kids said, but it's the behavior they don't like, not him. Chat Icon

today he had a speech eval and the person called me, the results were as I suspected. He has so many words and his grammar is great, but he has a lot of issues with pragmatic language. his focus, eye contact, and conversational skills are poor.

Now for the OT and FBA and our CSPE is 11/13
