Minecraft? reviews?
What is your take on this game?
my son keeps talking about it and my inlaws went and bought the game for him for xbox. i know you build stuff which i like since it's creative and he loves legos. However how is the violence? language?
my son is 6 and we're kind of anti-video games, especially ones with violence. When he gets to play (we limit it), it's Wii.
So how appropriate is this game for a 6 year old? anything bad about the game?

My kids are really big into Minecraft. They have the free tablet version, the full PC version, and the free PS4 demo version. There is standalone mode, and on-line multiplayer mode. If he stays off-line, there is absolutely no dialog at all. It's all blocks, so any "blood" from killing animals and bad guys is just some red blocks. In standalone mode, there are several other modes. In Creative Mode, it is basically virtual LEGOS. Survival Mode has "killing" of mobs and creepers, but the graphics are all just blocks, so it's like watching the LEGOS movie, but blockier.
My 11 yo DS and 8yo DD have been playing for well over a year now, and they both love it.

DS is 8 and he loves it. He has been playing with it for almost a year and I like the building and creative part of it. I don't get the game so much, because he plays it on the iPad, so I can't see what he is doing. It's violent when they have to kill the zombies, creepers and others, including animals (for food).
Personally, I think 6 is a bit young to play with it, since there are other games that don't have the "killing" part.
I always refer to www.commonsensemedia.org when in doubt. It's a great site because you can see reviews and age ratings for movies, books, apps, video games, etc.

DS is gonna be 6 and while I don't think it's really violent, it can become obsessive.
He's calmed down a bit since school started and we don't let him play it as much.

John who is 7 as been playing for acouple of months and we approve. Like pp it's virtual Legos. He does kill zombies and connects with his friends but it's fine.

Considering the alternatives out there, I gladly accept Minecraft. We have the game for XBox and it's on my iphone and tablet. DH doesn't "get" it, but I enjoy DS playing it (he is 7). He builds things, grows things, and he enjoys playing it. Is it addicting? Yes, but if you control it, that can be prevented. One of DH's issues was you can kill things (animals, zombies, enderman, etc), but in the mode DS plays, he doesn't do much of that - he is more into the building aspect.
He was introduced to it about 2 years ago and LOVES it.

Yes. I described it briefly in my earlier post, but Creative mode is very close to video LEGOS, where it's primarily building things. Survival mode is.... well..... survival.... so there's "killing" of various enemies, but it's not really "graphic", since it's all blocks.

My DS plays it more on the ipad, but he also is more into the building mode than anything else. I don't think it is that bad. And I hate video games
