Rescue Recommendations
We've rescued 2 dogs in the past, and as our first passed recently, I'm thinking about rescuing another. We got both dogs from the same shelter, but I wanted to look into other rescue organizations where we may be able to give an adult dog a loving home. Our first dog was at the shelter for a long time even though he was the sweetest, calmest, most patient dog, he was a pit mix with a physical defect so he was overlooked for a long time. Looking to help another sweet soul in need.
Any suggestions on where to look? We do have 2 young children which makes it a bit trickier.

Rescue Recommendations
I highly recommend the New Rochelle Humane Society. They perform behavior evaluations on all of the dogs and will honestly tell you if they think the dog is a good fit for young children.

New York State Retriever Rescue
Being that you have little ones, it's best, in my opinion to adopt a dog where you know the history and know that they lived with small children.

This is exactly why it's difficult. I feel like we kind of need to find a dog that was given up by a family for no good reason. And as much as I want to help a dog in need, I won't put my children at risk to do so.
And my heart is set on rescuing an older dog, not a puppy, so we will just keep looking until we find the right one to join our family.

This is exactly why it's difficult. I feel like we kind of need to find a dog that was given up by a family for no good reason. And as much as I want to help a dog in need, I won't put my children at risk to do so.

you can check petfinder and if you find a dog you like , just ask the rescue what the background of the dog is.
There are plenty of owner surrenders out there bc
-divorce
-life changes (a job move)
-owner died
-we get owner surrenders simply bc they just dont have the time
The rescue I am with (NYSRR) has 2 kid-approved dogs right now. A choc lab and a golden. Both have meet and greets going on this week but have not been adopted yet.

Rescue Recommendations
The specific breed dog rescues are very good with checking out their prospective rescuers but I think they overcrowd the foster care houses, which means that they may need more housetraining, etc.
However, you could get a breed that is very good with children generally. that may help.

Rescue Recommendations
Heavenly Angels Pet Rescue in Ozone Park. They have dogs of all ages, lots of older dogs that were surrendered. They have a Facebook page.

We got our dog from Bobbie and the Strays. The have dogs of all ages. They are in Freeport and Glendale, Queens.

My friend runs SNARR they rescue from high kill shelters and rehabilitate injured animals. Their fogs are in fister, often with families, so you will get a better idea of the dogs temperament.
