Maternity Leave-Hiring a replacement
I am 7 months pregnant and a project assistant for a large architectural firm in NYC. Last night my boss asked me to walk with him as he was headed toward the elevators and told me that while I'm gone they are going to hire someone new to cover my project and use someone internal to take care of his stuff (exp reports, travel, etc.). So I was shocked and taken back and this all happened while he was getting on an elevator to leave. I want to know if it is because of merit or does he not think I am a good fit, etc. I am set to have a review next Friday but he hasn't done it and I'm not sure if he will get to.
I was planning on taking 12 weeks. So I think by FMLA laws, my job is safe but my position is not. Is this right? I was thinking of approaching him today to ask him, what do you think?

You are correct... but, I mean, they need someone to handle the project while you are gone, so it doesn't surprise me that they might hire someone to take it over in the meantime. If you are nervous about when you come back, definitely have a conversation with him about what he sees for you when you do return. 3 months is a long time to have someone not working on a project, and they might just be hiring a temp, or someone they planned on hiring that they are putting in that slot temporarily until you return.

Thank you! I knew someone was going to be working on it while I was gone but I thought it was going to be someone internal just helping out until I got back, which is what they usually do. I will def try to talk to him.

When one of the executive assistants in my office went on maternity leave last year they had to get a temp to replace her while she was out. There was too much work to try to have the other 2 assistants cover. When she came back to work the temp was gone. Hopefully it is just a matter of having a dedicated person to the project specifically as opposed to sharing the work load? But I would just ask him what that means for when you return just to make sure.
And yes-they have to offer you a position (same salary) but not necessarily the same exact job.

Thank you! He said something like we'll see when you get back then. Like, we'll see how she is doing and then decide whether or not to switch her or not. It's def not a temp position.

Hmm that's odd. Would it be likely that there will be a new project that you would just get assinged to when you come back?
I think a lot of bosses prepare for the instance if the employee doesn't return after maternity leave. If you decide not to come back then he's got someone already on board that by then knows what the're doing; instead of having to look for someone new after the fact?
In any event good luck! And I hope they don't try to screw you over when you come back. Especially if you're work is specific and it's not like you can just do something else in a different department.

It truly sucks, but that's the private sector.

But it has to be a the same pay right?
I might be in the minority but I'm so stressed at work; it wouldn't be so bad if I came back and they had me doing something different but had to still pay me the same amount!

I am going thru the same thing right now...I'm due in January and I support the CEO of my company, among other duties. They have decided to hire someone to cover my job while I'm out and when I return that person will be moved to another area of the company.
At first I was concerned, but I understand this is the best course of action to make sure he is taken care of and MORE IMPORTANTLY - so I can relax during those 12 weeks off with my new baby and not be on the phone with work helping !

Thank you guys!
I think it was a blow to my ego like ok we'll just get someone else and you will have to go somewhere else. I also wanted to make sure it wasn't because of something I did.
I spoke to him briefly and he said no it's just to have someone here while you are gone.
I hate the idea of coming back to work and having to start over, learning new people, new project, etc.
It is what it is I suppose! Thank you for your comments though. I have my review next week (which he will not be able to complete) so maybe I will get a better read then.

Remember there are alot of ladies who decide to be sahm. They don't tell their employers so they collect disability and if any maternity leave.. they don't know if you are coming back til you are back.. at least with a temp they will have someone who can keep the workflow durring that time.

Very true, they have to cover their behinds in case you decide to resign.
Also, and this is up to you, don't get in the habit of helping over your leave. My coworker did this and was called almost every day. I made it very clear that I was enjoying my baby and out if touch unless there was an emergency.
