Tip from my doctor about pre-eclampsia
I had my 16 week appt last night and heard the heartbeat! yay!!! i mentioned to my doctor that i had pre-eclampsia last time and he said studies have shown that if you take a baby aspirin every day it reduces your chance of having pre-eclampsia again. i ran to the store to pick some up! thought id share the tip...

Re: Tip from my doctor about pre-eclampsia
Aspirin is not something pregnant women should typically take. Aspirin has been linked to several pregnancy complications, so it's only ok to take when the benefits (in your case avoiding pre-eclampsia) outweighs the risks.
I'd just caution anyone to take aspirin without checking with your doctor first.

The chart I have from when I was pregnant said low dose aspirin only in 1st trimester and only if prescribed by a doctor in 2nd & 3rd.

Baby aspirin is fine to take while pregnant, I took it my entire pregnancy as per my doctor.

That's fine that you took it, but in general, it's on the avoid list for pregnant women. As I said before, though, low-dose aspirin is sometimes prescribed during pregnancy to help treat medical conditions. It's just not something every pregnant woman should be taking. So that was my word of caution. Do not take it without a dr's advice.

Re: Tip from my doctor about pre-eclampsia
I had pre-E the first time around and am now 8 1/2 weeks - my doc has me taking low dose aspirin as well. I agree though - i would not be doing this unless directed by a doctor. Still - thank you to the OP - I think most people don't take medical advice from this site - but it's great to share ideas so that it's something you can ask your doctor about. It's almost like encouraging a second opinion. So - thank you!!

Re: Tip from my doctor about pre-eclampsia
just wanted to clear up...i wasn't giving medical advise i wouldn't expect you guys to run out and buy aspirin and start popping them. you should always talk to your doctor about it. i had no idea it could help until he mentioned it. so it's something that should be brought up during your appointment.

Re: Tip from my doctor about pre-eclampsia
I heard this also!! Instead, I have been taking a certain dose of fish oil that is supposed to have the same effect. I too had preeclampsia with DS and so far at 28 weeks, I'm having no issues at all! Fingers crossed!

did you talk to your doctor about fish oil? Only because I was told we're not allowed to take fish oil while pregnant. I'd love to know!

I think you have to make sure there's no mercury. I know my OB told me to make sure my DHA was specifically a prenatal version.
I had elevated BP but not pre e and my OB suggested taking extra tums for the calcium bc that's supposed to help with that.

I also heard about extra calcium for that. I have the 1000 CAL tums but have not taken. As for fishoil, many MFM's recommend fish oil but they have to be a pure blend. I have a good brand that is pure and certified.

Re: Tip from my doctor about pre-eclampsia
I had severe pre-e that started at 35 weeks with my DS1. With DS2 I was monitored closely and started on BP meds by week 17. I also took low dose aspirin as per my OB. My blood pressure continued to creep up slowly my 3rd trimester (still on aspirin). My meds were increased more than as I got closer to delivery. That being said I had a successful VBAC at 40w3d.
Research now is suggesting that pre-e is due to something with the baby(can't remember what) and not something that stems from mom.
