I have a feeling i'l be hosting thanksgiving again which i dont mind.
my mom asked me "what we're doing" so i told her ill have everyone over. its really just my mom , bro and my bf. and maybe a few people that i notice will be alone that day on my fb newsfeed that i will invite.
i decided NO TURKEY. the only one that looks fwd to it is my mom. i just like the skin and wing. the entire thing goes to waste, or i spend 30 min putting it in tupperware for my mom to take home. dont get me wrong, its good.. people eat it.. but for 4 people its really unnecessary.
sooo, i told her i will be making duck this year. she cringed. she doesnt hate duck but she just associates having a turkey on thanksgiving.
I also wont be home for christmas ( thailand/vietnam woopwooop!) so the option of making a turkey for thanksgiving and save the duck for xmas is out
am i wrong? for once, id like to do what I want.

I don't think you are wrong, but what about your other guests? I love duck, but I would feel a bit sad if I didn't have turkey on Thanksgiving.
How about making a duck and a turkey breast? The sides would all be there. The only annoyance would be making two types of gravy.

other guests would be ok. its just my mom. i guess i can just make turkey and make duck another day. less work for me anyway.

we had this same issue 2 years ago - DH and i were hosting for my FIL and BIL. I felt the same way about a turkey (having it go to waste) but in the end, that is what we went with. They both said they didnt mind if we did something else, but DH felt thanksgiving = turkey and with such a small group making 2 dishes didnt make sense for us. In the end, FIL said he was glad we went with the turkey
so - imo, i would have turkey (even if its just a small breast)

I'm not a big fan of duck and I looooove turkey (especially the gravy). What about doing a whole roasted chicken? Then you have a whole bird to put out but it's not a ton of waste. I'd consider that or a turkey breast but if you really want to do the duck then go for it.

I don't think you're wrong but Thanksgiving is all about the turkey IMO. I would be VERY disappointed if I went somewhere for turkey day and there was no turkey. Maybe make a smaller bird and lots more sides but I really wouldn't do duck instead.

See I hate turkey and don't touch it so I would LOVE if I could have something else for Thanksgiving.
Even a chicken- so much moister than turkey and less gamey.
I really am not much for tradition though....

You don't have to buy the whole bird. I know Stop and Shop sells just the turkey breast you would have to cook. Would she settle for just breast?

Eh, I don't love turkey, either. But Thanksgiving turkey is traditional, so I would suck it up and make it for the holiday meal (in fact, I do!).
Also, how will your other guests feel about duck? I personally enjoy duck, but I know for many it's an acquired taste.

My mom does too. She sets up her kitchen like a buffet after dinner. She leaves all the to go containers and lids out. She makes the announcement if you want to go, get to it. We all take what we want and she just watches.

i spent a weekend over the summer at a friends parents house in the hamptons. we're all older (im the youngest 30) and it was my first time there....
after drinks/ dinner the father got up and yelled BLITZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and everyone RAN with dishes/ glasses/ etc im like wtf?! 
he said he has been doing this for many years. every gathering in their home at the end of each meals he yells "blitz" and everyone scrambles and puts everything away. loading the dishwasher and cleaning off the kitchen and dining area takes 10 minutes when everyone pitches in. it also helps that they have 2 dishwashers and 4 sinks but how great is that!? genius!
