Apartment prices?
Is it possible to negotiate on the rent of apartments? DH and I separating & I have to find an apartment. There are a few a like but are a lot of $$ but I feel safe there. The place I really like is about $200 more a month that I can afford to spend.

Apartment prices?
In a complex probably not but we rent our our condo and we negotiated on the rent and security.

Yes, like everything else, it depends on the circumstances.
I occasionally handle rentals for individual landlords (not management companies), and it's not uncommon for a prospective tenant to offer less. If the tenant is ideal (great credit and income, no pets, etc.), a landlord is more likely to negotiate on rent a bit, in my experience.
But maybe $50/$100. I think negotiating down $200/month is ambitious, unless the rental is really overpriced for the area, the size of the apartment, etc.
On most areas of Long Island, rental demand far exceeds the supply. So landlords can usually be a bit choosy and get their price, especially for a nice apartment in a desirable area.

Rent is definitely something you can try to negotiate on, but remember that the rental market is competitive and you could be going against someone willing to pay the full asking rent. That doesn't mean you can't try, but I think you'll be lucky to get a $75/mo reduction. $200 sounds like a lot.

Also keep in mind that rent often is raised yearly or every two years, so if you are feeling uncomfortable with that price now, I would keep looking. Especially if this is a complex.
Or, if you really like the complex, maybe see if they have a studio instead of a 1-bedroom as a compromise if that falls into your budget. (Not sure how many bedrooms you are looking for but you get my point I'm sure).
If you are okay with paying a fee, maybe go with a realtor as well who can help you to find something in your price range.
Especially private homes they may be more willing to negotiate.
