Reminded me of the threads on here about the pan handlers seen around here during the warmer months. I guess they are everywhere

Pan handler scam in California
not saying they aren't scammers but that story doesn't really proof they are not. what if their car is the only thin they have left that they right out own? maybe they are living out of the car after not being able to afford $2400 a month in rent anymore. again not saying they aren't scammers I am just saying they really have no proof that they really don't need the money

Call me jaded. But I don't buy that. They are most likely gypsies that are everywhere now.
They just did a story on News4 about it. Well they didn't call them gypsies but I have a hard time believing they aren't.
And sorry...if you have a Benz..sell it before panhandling on the street with your kid. Because obviously you aren't using it to get to work. THIS is their job. Scammers. And here in NYC it's illegal to panhandler with children.

sorry, but I don't buy it. Sell th e freakin car before you become homeless!
And they are probably diabetic and eat stolen bananas in that car while parked in a spot that someone else is waiting for. I guess anything is possible

I didn't know this. There is a woman who sits on 5th ave between 42nd & 44th with her daughter who can't be more than 4 years old - if that. Every time I walk by the little girl is sleeping in the mom's lap. I feel terrible for them and have given them a few dollars a couple of times.

Re: Pan handler scam in California
my point was the story doesn't prove anything and I was expecting it would. I was excepting that they found these people living in a big beautiful house. all it did was report what most know a lot of people begging for money are most likely lying about it. they are pan handlers everywhere and they are legitimate people who are homeless.
and FWIW if i was homeless I am not sure I would be too quick to sell the one thing that could guarantee me shelter or help me get to job interviews etc.

I think I'd probably sell the Benz and pick myself up a used chevy.

Eye opening, right? And very sad. What they are doing will have an impact on the people who really need the help. Because it will make everyone rethink handling over a few dollars.

Exactly! If I can trade in a car worth +20K for one that costs $5K instead of being homeless, I think I'd take that option

Re: Pan handler scam in California
I think this is much bigger than just panhandling. IMO, I think this ties into human trafficking, rape and forced pregnancies, etc.
As an aside, I recently read a really good article about a couple who fell on hard times but kept their luxury car. I would have to find it, but I've had a long day and don't feel like dealing with any more drama.

I've read that story too - the car was paid off and they had lost their jobs and had twin babies and she wrote about getting food stamps in the car.

Pan handler scam in California
I agree morningcuppacoffee. I def think it has to do with human trafficking. I watched a news story on this once. They are forced to sit there. They can only take money. Not food or goods. It is sad.

Pan handler scam in California
This is so horrible and breaks my heart for those children. Some days it is too cold for them to sit there. I just think of my little girl and how sad she would be to sit all day on a dirty sidewalk. I've read other reports that parents drug their kids to get them to sit still for long periods of time.
And in regard to having a luxury car and being in financial need...a lot of people prob don't have a paid off Mercedes, either financed or leased. It's feasible that if one lost a job you would keep the car and drive it around but still not have money for food, maybe you're several months behind on the payments for the car.

Yes the article the above poster mentioned is the one I read too.
I also know a couple people who were on hard times financially and family loaned them their cars.
It was still a struggle to come up with gas money though, as well as for bills for everything else.

I saw them once in Massapequa almost out on Sunrise Hwy by the shopping center where Panera is.
I called the cops and they knew the situation well, but based on their "we" can't do anything response, made me also think it was much bigger...the one I spoke to also said they were coming in from Elmhurst, Queens.
I also have read about them drugging kids.

Pan handler scam in California
So much bad about this.
Why is homelessness such a nasty thing that they can't find a better place than a street corner? Why are they homeless to start with? Is it wrong to give to someone in need? If you don't trust the sign, don't spare the dime. I never give to beggars but I feel bad for them We have shelters that are full We have shelters that are scary It is SUCH a mess that its EASY for us to say "I don't blame them for begging for help" People come here BECAUSE of the benefits and the fact they can get something for free. There's always someone willing to give to beggars so they stay Are we judging their choices or just giving the money? Do we know the steps they took to get where they are?
I visited Cali and found that the nicest areas had the most homeless because they also had the most programs for homeless. So its a never ending cycle. I walked by a homeless man with AJ in San Fran, he went to move and put out his cigarette and a knife (large) fell out of his paper, he muttered and apology and picked it up to hide it again. AJ looked at me and I thought "Well great, thankfully he isn't mental as well." Ugh!
Its just a messed up world.
I HATE seeing them with kids. yes I judge them. Your kid should be in SCHOOL (the older ones) or in care (the younger ones) not on a street corner in our heat, cold, weather, waiting for you to make enough for lunch. Drives me crazy. In the summer they put the kids in the shade and the kids run near streets with cars. GRRR. You call the cops but they move on quickly.
The kids with beggars thing just started here last summer.

These women are disgusting and don't deserve these children. That poor child was eating off the ground so her mother could make a dollar instead of getting off their lazy azzes and getting a job.

Re: Pan handler scam in California
ah the old sell the mercedes and your life will be great argument
I heard it 4 years ago when I was starting over after my horrible marriage, $200K in debt and sleeping on my friends couch
Yes, I too had the fabulous life changing mercedes!
the truth was I was 2 months behind in payments, the car was worth LESS then I owed the bank for it
so if I sold it- I would need $10K to get clear title and then what????? now I have no car and no way to get to work
Keeping that car allowed me to make my life the way it is today- I own a house, I have no debt and the mercedes is still running- and I paid it off 9 months ago- 18 months early
I will never judge anyone -

glad to hear you got back on your feet.
I tend to try not to judge anyone either (I do it but I try not too ) no one can know for sure the real situation. like i said i was expecting the article to have some solid proof that were scammers and they didnt, are the scammers yes probably but we certainly cant know 100% they were
