Facewash/Deodorant Recommendations

Hi everyone. I am newly pregnant for the first time and have some questions. I just want to make sure the products that I am using are safe. I use Clinique 3 step skin care for normal skin and my deodorant is secret clinical strength.

Any insight or recommendations would be appreciated. My first sono is this Friday but I figure I would get a jump start on here before asking my doctor.

Re: Facewash/Deodorant Recommendations

Hi! I found this article helpful when I was overhauling my medicine cabinet after I got pregnant:

Link - skincare article

I went to Whole Foods after I found out the bronzer I was using had a retinoid in it (!!) and stocked up on some more "natural" beauty care items. I've been using Cetaphil face wash and moisturizers, which I believe are safe. Also, I have an Aveeno tinted moisturizer I use on occasion. I have continued to use my Clinique compact and also a Colore Science powder.

I tried to swap out my regular deodorant for an organic deodorant but, I swear, it made my armpits smell WORSE!! It was "Nourish Organic" in Fresh Fig. I had to stop and go back to my regular deo. I also bought the Nourish Organic Fresh Fig Body Lotion and have been using BioOil everywhere.

I switched out my shampoo for a Burt's Bees kind without sulfates, and switched again to Paul Mitchell "Double Hitter" without sulfates and it also has conditioner.

I changed the aforementioned bronzer to a blush called "Sante" I got at Whole Foods. I believe it is made from beets and I really like it!

I use Tom's toothpaste (with fluoride) and Weleda body wash (all natural, also from Whole Foods). I also use Kiss My Face Olive Oil soaps.

I'm certainly not perfect, but I really did try to pay attention to what I was putting ON my body! I hope this helps!

Same here, I actually never thought of it since the doctor never said anything

I didn't change my face wash or my deodorant. From my first pregnancy, I just remember my dr saying not to use anything on your face with salicylic acid. This pregnancy, my dr didn't say anything either way.

I switched to Belli face wash, moisturizer by Juice beauty and Toms deodorant. The deodorant switch was prior to pregnancy since i had calcifications show up on a mammo.

Thanks girls!!! I started reading What to Expect When you are Expecting so I saw some references to some stuff to steer clear of and of course I get nervous immediately that I'm doing something wrong or harmful LOL

P.S. and what about Perfume???

I mean this in the nicest, least judgmental way possible but don't drive yourself crazy over things like this. There are so many medical things in pregnancy that will cause you to stress and worry that your perfume, deodorant, face wash, shampoo, etc. shouldn't be one of them!

I changed my face wash only because I used acne stuff with salicylic acid. I switched to Neutrogena Naturals, but I also tried Burt's Bees.

I also switched my foundation. Foundation causes me to break out so again I used a Neutrogena foundation with salicylic acid. I'm not sure my new foundation is much better, but to be honest I skip it unless I'm going out. But I work at my dads with my uncle, dad and two other guys I've known since childhood, so I don't feel the need to look great at work.

I haven't changed anything else. I agree I think people get overly crazy.

Oh but I did switch to cleaning with vinegar and water and avoiding most cleaning products, except when I do the bathroom because I'm allergic to mold, so I put on gloves and a mask, use strong cleaning supplies, bleach it, turn the vent on and then get the hell out if there for at least an hour.

I used to use stuff that had salicyclic acid it it so I went with unmedicated face and body wash instead.

I've also been looking into this subject! Good place to evaluate the products you are currently using or would like to use in future is the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

I read some journal articles about salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide and it seems most studies have focused on taking these orally and it was determined unsafe for pregnant women. It doesn't seem that they have studied using these topically while pregnant. My dermatologist recommended being cautious and avoiding any products with these ingredients while pregnant.

I also found some good product recommendations (EO Beauty Products) that I was thinking of trying through this blog: http://lindawagner.net/blog/2012/08/what-are-the-best-natural-beauty-products/index.html

And she recommends purchasing them on iHerb.com, which has great prices.

Good luck and Congrats on you pregnancy!
