Junie B. Jones Book Question
My DD just read a chapter to me of her Junie B. Jones book she took out from the school library today.
It is normal for these books to have awful grammer, run on sentences, fragments and use words like stupid and dumb?
How is this ok for a 1st grader?
I get that this is Junie's thought process and how she speaks but it isn't going to help my DD at all by using incorrect grammer.
Am I overreacting because I am a high school English teacher and this is the norm for 1st grade books? What do you think?

Re: Junie B. Jones Book Question
I teach 1st grade and pulled Junie B off the shelves of my classroom library because a parent complained. I let my dd read them though because they are funny! It is a level M so kids really can't rely on syntax and meaning since it's so improper. I read it aloud at night and when get some good chuckles from Junie B's antics. You're right, though. Kids don't speak like that anymore. I feel like my mother spoke like that as a kid in the 50s!

Re: Junie B. Jones Book Question
Junie B Jones is AWFUL. We had a few that we got from our older niece and DD and I read one together. Fortunately she didn't like it because I then would have been conflicted- I want her to read the books she wants to read that are on her level, as that series is, but everything about that character and book was awful! I can't believe the series is so popular.

She likes them and I don't have the heart to tell her I don't want her to read them.
My post cracks me up because I am complaining about grammar and realized that I spelled grammar wrong.

Re: Junie B. Jones Book Question
Dd reads them and I'm def not a fan. But she had about 5 of them and I don't want to discourage reading.... She likes other series books too so I try to push those..

If my DD had liked them, I definitely would have dealt with them. They are very popular so there must be plenty of kids who do like them. When I read the one about Junie hiding in the school after it was closed I a bit nervous that it would put ideas in DD's head, but she was like, "It's ok mom, I know better."

Junie B. Jones Book Question
Not a fan, can't stand the "dumb" and "stupid" references in it. There are so many other funny and good books for kids this age. I don't allow her to get them anymore.
