Oil company overfilling oil tank
Has anyone had the experience where the oil company overfilled the oil tank because they say that the ventalarm on the tank is broken? This oil company called discount fuel overfilled our oil tank so much that it pushed the gauge out of the top of the tank and oil spilled all over the floor, seeping up the wood in the basement. They sent a tech which they charged us money for and the tech had to drain an extra 5 gallons out to mitigate the spillover! We've lived here for 20 yrs and never had such a problem!
Eta: there was so much oil, it spilled onto the street where the truck was parked too but no oil outside of the fill hole by the side of the house.

Re: Oil company overfilling oil tank
Since nobody responded i'll take a stab at this.
I'd be super pissed, but I would also be very concerned as to how I would prove to discount-fuel that my oil tank was indeed not defective. There has to be better fail safe things in place to prevent this from happening.
Please post an update to this. How are they handling this? Are they forcing you to pay this bill? Going through insurance?

This just happened to my friend, but with General! They sent a cleanup crew and handled it really well. According to him an oil spill goes on public record, so that's something to be concerned about if you plan to sell anytime soon. Not sure how accurate that is - just what he told me. He's not paying a dime. They've taken complete responsibility.

You might want to contact the DEC - I think the oil company is required to do that, but it might be only for spills over a certain amount. They might be able to point you in the right direction. I would also contact the pil compnay and request their insurance info to put in a claim with their insurance company (or maybe you have to call your homeowners and they will take the lead in that).

All oil spills over 5 gallons need to be reported to the NYSDEC. They will ask you questions about type of fuel, approximate gallons spilled, how it happened, etc.

Re: Oil company overfilling oil tank
Hi. I know this is a year later but this exact thing happened to my home that I just bought. Discount Fuel came to fill up our tank and overfilled it! Flooded our basement and spilled onto our lawn. We are beyond pissed and I just want to know your experience. Were you able to sue them? Etc. Thank you! I hope you read this!

Re: Oil company overfilling oil tank
This MUST be reported to the DEC and if your oil company did not do this, i'd look into legal advice about suing them.
my mother used to work for slomins and the proper steps need to be followed. will cost the oil company at least 25Gs to correct the problem. so, you may see their hesitation to do it right!
GET ON THE PHONE WITH THE DEC!!
