East Meadow please come in!
Hi!
So our search continues and we have now looked into East Meadow. I think I've pretty much searched and read all the previous posts about East Meadow on here! Mostly really good feedback about the area and the schools which makes me feel comfortable but there are still some things I have questions about:
1. "The numbered streets"- there were one or two replies about how this area is the less desirable area in East Meadow... well this is where we found the house we're interested in. Any specific reason behind this? Should I be wary of anything. To be more specific, the house backs up to McVey and is on 7th St.
2. The jail?? In my research I found there is the county jail there! Yikes! My DH freaked once he heard this. Does it house big time criminals or is it a temporary holding place? Does it affect your quality of life in anyway?
3. 1/2 day Kindergarten or Pre-K- My daughter will be going to pre-k in September and then Kindergarten in '15. This worries me, I've heard of SCOPE, I would need something from 6:30/7am to 4pm! Anyone have more info?
4. LIRR- Lastly, My dh would commute via LIRR to the city. I know East Meadow does not have a direct line. Which station is most ideal for parking his car and going? preferably free parking.
Thank you sooo much!

East Meadow please come in!
i am closing on a house in EM this week actually. ill try to answer all i can but im not that familiar with the area so i cant help much with the numbered streets/mcvey section. we purchased in the barnum woods section
i had the same concerns about the jail but know a few people that live near by and they arent concerned about it. it is not really a temporary holding place, its a jail. from what i was told it doesnt impact anyone one way or another.
im no help about kindergarten or prek, but i know there are some daycares and programs offered for after school (not sure of hours)
the LIRR that DH is going to be taking is the Merrick station. Its about 3 miles from us and parking is free (dont need a pass or anything). ive heard it gets crowded though
good luck you cant fm if you have any more questions, but im not sure how helfpul ill be since im not officially living there yet

For the LIRR, I'd park at Bellmore b/c it's much bigger and has more parking. Merrick is much more limited in parking spaces.

Re: East Meadow please come in!
I am in E Meadow and my DH commutes and takes the LIRR from Merrick. I know plenty of people who live in the # streets! no issues there. mcVey is a good elementary school. I know there is the scope program but no info on that. Do know some people who have used Big Chief for pre K. I have lived in East Meadow most of my life and been really happy there. Good luck with your house search.

Re: East Meadow please come in!
From what I've heard it's a program that supplements half day schools and also has am and pm extended hours. Just don't know exactly how it works...

My sister and I both went to scope. You do your homework and they give you a snack, let you play in the gym.

Re: East Meadow please come in!
My office is in N. Bellmore (and I live there, too), so very close to East Meadow.
A lot of my clients who look in East Meadow prefer Barnum Woods and Parkway elementary schools/neighborhoods. Those are further south and border Merrick and Bellmore.
I am sure you know this but a small part of East Meadow (off of N. Newbridge Rd.,north of Hempstead Tpke) is zoned for Levittown schools. East Meadow is a pretty large school district (part of Westbury - the Salisbury area) is zoned for East Meadow schools.
East Meadow also covers a fairly large geographic area, and I think different pockets have their own distinct feel. A lot of buyers have strong preferences for one area over another. But I would agree that there's nothing wrong with the numbered streets... it's a nice residential area, and many people rave about McVey elementary.
Taxes in East Meadow are better than in neighboring towns (e.g., Levittown, Bellmore, Merrick, etc.)
I know some people prefer to stay away from the county jail area, hospital, etc., just because it's generally more congested over there, but I don't think there's any qualify of life concerns because of the jail.
As far as the train line, you could also take the train out of Hicksville, which is a major hub. People who live further north in East Meadow sometimes choose that, as you can go right up Newbridge Rd. I agree the parking is better at Bellmore train station (I used to do the commute, and there really is ample parking).

Open to all 3 and 4 year old students. Transportation is not provided. Enrollment is limited to sixteen (16) students in the three year old program and twenty (20) students in the four year old program. If there are more eligible students than spots the child’s name will be placed on a wait list. Enrollment is based strictly on a first come, first served basis.

East Meadow please come in!
I've lived in East Meadow my whole life and now I live in Salisbury behind the jail which is still East Meadow School district. When my parents moved to East Meadow 35 years ago everyone said you had to live in the "Barnum Woods" area, so they made sure they bought a house there. After all that only one out of 4 of my siblings went to the "Barnum Woods" schools ( Barnum Woods elementary school, and East Meadow High). McVey is a great elementary school. The numbered streets are not busy streets and they really aren't near the jail. They are on the opposite side of Hempstead Turnpike! As far the jail is concerned. There really is nothing to worry about. I worked at the jail for years and I can say from that stand point that you have nothing to worry about. As far as living near the jail. The only down side it is busier around there because it is near the hospital and Hempstead Turnpike. Otherwise you would never know the jail is there! I am hoping that one day East Meadow will have a full day kindergarten. The reason why we don't is because we have a lot of senior housing and they vote it down because they don't want their taxes going up! If you have any other questions feel free to FM me! Hope this helped!

East Meadow please come in!
Numbered streets are fine (McVey side number streets are McVey school) http://www.eastmeadow.k12.ny.us/mcvey/Parent%20Links/essentialinformation.html Other side of Newbridge Numbered streets are Parkway School McVey is one of the biggest schools (not that that's a bad thing, just a note - there are 5 elementary schools in EM) The Jail really is never an issue, I would say sometimes Hempstead Turnpike can get interesting at night but nothing horrible Just not a take a walk on your own at midnight I would ask how loud it gets during the summer because there are a lot of leagues that use the McVey fields for games, soccer, baseball, etc. Preschool there are a lot of options (not expensive) Calvary, Christ of Kings, Tender Tales, Firehouse (this ones a co-op) - full day there's big chief, merrick woods, south shore, alphabetland, kiddie junction Kindergarten is 1/2 day, SCOPE for Kindergarten would be either morning or afternoon but nothing will cover all day. Some kids go to Merrick Woods, South Shore, Big Chief, Alphabetland all of these would be about $800 a month give or take After/Before school starting in 1st grade is http://www.scopeonline.us/childcare.php LIRR - you can take Bellmore, Wantagh, Merrick ETA - EM schools also have CAPE which is a really inexpensive extra curricular program that starts at 4. You can pick days and times and do karate, dance, gymnastics, music, cooking there are dozens and dozens of options.
Feel free to FM me with any questions :)

East Meadow please come in!
Hello! I am closing on my house next Wednesday, moving to East Meadow! Any recommendations for the area would be great! We are moving in what is considered "Barnum Woods" but it is on the East side of Merrick Ave right before the Waldbaum's on Front Street. I hope this is a good area!
