Re: Anyone own or had a tree walking coonhound?
I've had my Treeing Walker Coonhound for about 3 years now. She is NOT at all a high energy dog, and her favorite pastime is sleeping on the couch. We got her as a companion for my high-energy Doberman Pinscher, but she is far too lazy to keep up with him all day. She'll perk up to go for a walk or to play, etc., but she doesn't require a ton of exercise and stimulation like my dobe does. I would say it's possible she just seems lower energy because I'm so used to my dobermans, who are very high energy... but honestly she's pretty low energy compared to most dogs I have met.
Temperament-wise, she can't be beat. She is incredibly tolerant of almost anything, and I can trust her with little kids and my cats. We adopted her from the shelter as an adult, and she honestly didn't bark for the first year and a half we had her. Then, she treed something. We live on a horse farm, though, and one day she managed to tree a ground hog in our yard. Since then, she has felt a lot more comfortable barking. She is pretty vocal, but the barking has been fairly easily managed by training.
My walker hound is a total love bug and big time cuddler, too.
She is a hound, so she can be a little stubborn. However, she has really been easy to train. Barking triggers are usually seeing small animals outdoors when she is loose in the yard.
I think they are great dogs. A lot of the literature says they are high energy dogs, bt that hasn't been my experience. I have several friends who have had them and most of theirs have been mellow like my girl. That said, my dogs do get regular exercise, so it's not like she's sleeping 20 hours a day, 7 days a week either. Some of my friends' walkers are worse about the barking, though. That said, I think it is still manageable with training.
I have lots of great things to say about the breed from my experience - though I'm definitely not an expert on this particular breed. And I can still say that even though mine got sprayed by a skunk on Monday morning....
