Yes. It's safe.

We bought in East Meadow, on the Levittown border. We have a young child with another on the way. I don't worry about the jail at all. I would not want to buy within a few blocks of it, but I have no problem being a mile or 2 away.

I think I'm in the same neighborhood as the posted above. I totally forget that the facility is even there.

I used to live over there in Westbury. It's safe.
You don't even realize it's there (it's right behind the hospital).

Re: Jail in east meadown Yikes

My parents grew up in East Meadow. Never bothered them. I was born next door at NUMC. But, when I was three years old, my parents made the decision to move. It had more to do with the fact that my father worked at that jail for 25+ years. Because of that, he felt living close to it was a liiiiiittle too close for comfort.

When I was born, my dad was wheeling my mom out of the hospital, she was holding me, and as they came off the elevator to exit, three inmates (that's what they call prisoners) were coming on the elevator in shackles - being brought there for a physical. They immediately recognized my dad and said Congrats!!! (LOL). My mom was mortified. A few years later they sold and moved.

The only part that used to bother my parents about living in East Meadow, because of the jail, was that several times a week as prisoners get released, they are released on foot and basically walk down Carmen Avenue and wherever. It was a little nerve-wracking, no doubt.

On the flip-side, the jail houses people who are convicted to a sentence of one year or less so, for the most part, you are not getting murderers/rapists, violent crazy criminals being housed there and ultimately released into the area... to go wherever after they are released. BUT you do get a few really violent people who are being housed there WHILE awaiting trial or during their trial. Once their trial is over and they are convicted, they are sent upstate to maximum security penitentiaries. My father was there while Joel Rifkin was there, Colin Ferguson, Henry Hill, etc. Since he retired they had a now convicted cop-killer there during his trial. He murdered an innocent police officer just doing his job and then shot a random man shortly thereafter, execution style. So, trying to give you alllllll the sides of the coin.

My parents have life-long friends who still live in the area and they and their children, now grown, are fine.

Hope that helps Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I've never really had a buyer factor the jail into living in East Meadow or a neighboring town like Levittown.

Some people don't care for the area right by the jail, the hospital, etc. in East Meadow because it's more congested there or perhaps closer to some less desirable areas, in some people's view.

But the jail itself is not a maximum security prison for violent offenders, as the previous poster said, and it's not even in the part of East Meadow that borders Levittown (that's further east,... around Newbridge Rd. you have a pocket of Levittown zoned for East Meadow schools).

Obviously, only you know your own comfort zone, but the property values or buyer demand in Levittown is not at all affected by the jail in East Meadow.
