Does your dog let you know when they need to go out?

Our dog doesn't let us know when she wants to go out, so we're still dealing with accidents at 6 months. She is usually good for between 3-4 hours. But if we are working around the house or let time get away from us, she will pee in the house. She doesn't warn us, doesn't bark, she doesn't ring the bell, nothing. Anyone have any suggestions? How does your dog let you know when they need a walk?

When we were training, we used a puppy litter box (breeder recommended), but I think what we did would work with wee wee pads or newspaper, or whatever you use. We placed it by the back door. So every time he had to go, he went to by the door. Then once we took it away, he would go to the back door when he had to go so we knew to let him out. Eventually he started sitting there and waiting or barking to let us know.

I would also really watch him for clues...restlessness, sniffing, but I know it's tough to keep your eye on him when you're trying to do stuff around the house.

We trained our dog to use wee wee pads. We take him out regularly, but he has though in case he has to go when we are not here/if he doesn't let us know. Although he gets EXTREMELY excited when he take him for a walk, he won't let us know when he needs to go.

Depending on the size of your dog, this option might work.

Normally, except when it's pouring outside. Then I have to throw her out of he house to pee/poop. I did train her to go on a pad if she goes inside, so that usually helps on those days.

Yes. They go to the back door and tap on it with their front paws.

Sometimes they do it just to go out and come right back in for a treat lol So I kinda know their habits and only let them out when its been a little bit since the last time they went

Ditto, except he does it at the front door. In the beginning, we trained him using treats - brought him by front door around time we thought he had to pee, when we took him out and he peed, we then gave him a treat.

We do this too. And sometimes, I think that she may go to the door, but she won't make any noise to let you know she's there. So if you're in another room and you miss it, she comes back into a main area and pees.
I wish I could get her to bark or growl, since she clearly doesn't get that she's supposed to ring the bell.

This is our problem too. We have a rescue and is housebroken but she's had accidents because if we don't see her go to the door she pees in the house. I'm learning her other signals and I either crate her or keep her with me if I can't take her out that minute I know she has to go. We bought a doggie door bell but we have yet to train her with it yet. I'm hoping that should do the trick

My dog scratches the door one time when he needs to go out. My aunt trained her dog to use a bell. She hung the bell low enough so that the dog could get to it but wouldn't bump into it and before they went out she would prompt her to touch the bell. After a while the dog learned to touch the bell to go out.

yes he lets me know. when he was younger he would let me know I just didn't realize it.

Yours might be telling you but you might not be picking up on the signs yet.

We trained them to ring the bell that hangs on the door and/or scratch the door, sit by the door and wait.

Re: Does your dog let you know when they need to go out?

In the beginning he didn't until we got into a very strict routine. He goes out once in the morning, once again at 4:30, and then once before bed. He knows the routine but if he needs to go out in between those times he will go to the hook where we hang his leash (we keep it in a central part of the house) and sit there and either look at it or whine.

We also have learned that he has "signs" when he needs to go. Its possible that your dog IS telling you he needs to go out but you just haven't figured out what his signs are. With my dog, he gets very hyper and wont sit still when he needs to go. I've learned that if I see this behavior in him, I always ask "Do you need to go out?" and wait for his response (which will usually be an excited jump or he heads towards the leash hook).

We've had Charlie for about a year and it took us the better part of 6 months before he stopped having accidents in the house and we learned his signs.

We did the same. No damage to the door and we can hear it from pretty much anywhere in the house.

Does your dog let you know when they need to go out?

6 months is still young. In the first year we always took her out every 2-4 hours. When she was a year I felt like we could sleep through the night with out having to take her out. She would let us know by just a little sigh.

We did have training bells on the door. She did hit them. Chloe who we are her 3rd home, will just sit at the door.

Your pup will get in a routine. Good luck!!!!!

Our puppy is about 7 months old and she lets us know about 70% of the time, the other 30% - not at all and she just pees and poops wherever she wants. She peed on our bed the other day with NO WARNING, no alert, anything. Still a work in progress here, but we too are struggling to get to 100%.
