Website Designers/ Builders

Hi

Question for Website Designers or Builders, from a lay[wo]man....

Are designers charging $5,000 to build a website using WordPress?

I hired a company to build a website. No contract, just an outline of what we asked for on an invoice. We paid $1200 for them to get started, and have gone back to ask them to correct things at least three times, since October.

I am furious that not only has is taken so long, but they made it live before it was completely done because we wanted to get a press release out.

The main contact there is making me feel like I can't trust him now, so I came on here to get some new perspectives, as this is not my area of expertise.

TIA!

It really depends on what features you need. Is there monetary transaction features on the site?

Agree that it depends on the features/functionality and scope. While Wordpress provides out the box functionality, if there was a custom design or upgraded back-end or database integration, $5K seems pretty reasonable if they were building a completely new site.

For a small agency, it's not uncommon to get a Statement of Work with an outline of the scope in a form of an estimate/invoice. They however should have provided you with a detailed timeline with key milestones for each phase of the project.

I've lead website projects that ranged from a week to 9 months, so there a lot of factors that determine the time. Anytime a project is rushed to meet some deadline that condenses the project timeline, there's always room for error because the agency may have had to cut corners to meet the new deadline. If there was a new launch date, then they should have been clear about impact on development and QA.

thanks for your input! makes perfect sense.

we told them we needed a back end database to be able to change product names & items numbers in the future, which he agreed to.

but now he's saying that's e-commerce, and that'll be another $3k

here's the site: www.bnaburz.com

I recommended a friend to a developer we use for our site and she paid $5,000 total for her e-commerce site. She has since gone out of business but i remember her receiving various quotes and that seemed to be the most reasonable.

I took a quick look at the site and I think $5K is very reasonable. The product section has a lot of detail and images that is a lot to manage if it's hard-coded in Wordpress.

Couple of things come to mind:
* Wordpress is basically a content management system that is pretty user friendly, so you could update basic product info yourself.
* If a backend database wasn't in the initial scope and requested after he started work, then there is some additional development that is needed and $3K seems reasonable.
* Be very clear what he means by e-commerce. At the core eCommerce is selling products online, but to me it sounds like you just want a user friendly admin interface that will allow you to update/add/remove product information and have it update the site automatically. His thought process may be to use an eCommerce API/software so he doesn't have to completely rebuild the product section. It may also give you the option of being able to turn on actual selling functionality in the future.
* If you think there is ever a remote chance that you'd want to sell products down the line tell him now, so he can account for it in the design layout and back-end integration. It will save you money in the long run.
* Make sure he provides training on how to make those updates later.

Re: Website Designers/ Builders

My husband owns a marketing company and does website design. He just finished up del fuego''s new site. He would never go forward with a project without first providing a detailed proposal with price breakdowns as well as prices for additional items if chosen to add on. Be careful - there are some companies out there who will do part of your project and then hit you up for tons more money before they will complete it. I know because before he had his company I hired the wrong website designer and my husband ended up having to fix the mess. I would flush out all of the project details in writing before just handing over more money.

You can contact my husband through his website if you have more questions. Www.ignition-mktg.com he is always happy to answer questions. Pm me if you would like his number.
