Our dog still isn't great about telling us when she needs to go out, but we're on a pretty good schedule, so there are minimal accidents. We leave her loose when we leave the house for a few hours and sites great. From what I can tell she just lays around and looks out the front window like a cat. Lol. That said, she is questionable past 3-4 hours. On the rare occasion we need to be gone longer, we crate her. How old was your dog when you were able to leave it alone for longer? I would love to get rid of the crate all together once I know she can be trusted for longer periods to not pee/poop inside.

We adopted him when he was about 6 months. I don't remember exact timing, but he was crate trained the first few weeks. Then on the weekends, we'd do small tests, leaving him out longer and longer each day. I don't think it was more than 2-3 months after which we left him out completely. We have a dog walker that's been coming since the beginning to walk him once a day during lunch time, but we haven't had any issues for two years now.

So how long between when you leave until the dog walker comes? And what if you have a family party or something further from home on the weekends?

We usually leave by 7:30 or 8, dog walker comes around 12:00-12:30 and walks him for an hour, then we get home around 6-6:30. So he gets a break around the 4-5 hour mark.

If we have a family party or something that takes us out of the house longer and we can't take him for the day, then we ask one of our neighbors to take him out or have him do a play date with their dogs. If we go away on the weekend, it's mainly been to houses where we can bring him or we have our in laws sometimes come and stay at our house to hang out with him. When we went away on vacations, our neighbors usually take care of him.

Our dog will be 2 in March he is home for 8 hours (goes out at 7:45am and DH gets home around 4pm). Mon, Wed, and Fri he is home the whole day no accidents. Tues and Thur we send him to doggie day camp at PetSmart. My husband works in a school so he trained him over the summer when he was home. The longest we have ever left him is 8 and half I feel bad pushing it any more then that. He is also a big dog 76 pounds.

I think when they are one they should be able to hold it for at least 8 hours. I do not like to leave her that long though, just because I feel bad.

We have a dog walker during the week, she could definitely last the whole day but I like her to have exercise and mental stimulation.

On weekends if we have a family party or similar, we will make sure to wear her out with exercise - take her to the park for at least an hour or take her to doggie daycare. That way if we get caught up or stuck in traffic she will be too tired to get into trouble.

My dog is a year and still hoes in the crate when we are not home or to go yo sleep. I don't worry about accidents but he definitely would destroy the house
