Career on Long Island
I am currently working as a 1:1 Direct Support Professional (MR/DD) and looking to work in a long term Long Island based job (Eastern Nassau/Western to mid-Suffolk area). I am open to specialist type of jobs where I would need to get certified. My fiancé suggested case manager but I am curious if there are ant jobs that are needed and in demand that have benefits and where I can make more than what I make now ($12.50). I also work nights until 1am to make extra money and I enjoy it do want a job that isn't terribly early like my current job 730-330 would be great.

i work in the field- however as a behavior specialist. for my position a masters/ license is required. it depends on what type of job. for case management on long island, most require an LMSW or at the bare minimum a bachelors degree plus 20 credits in health sciences. i have been in the field a while and can answer any questions for you.

DW was a behavior specialist assistant until last year when the regulations changed and you had to have a masters- basically eliminating the "assistant"s
maybe MSC or program coordinator? either needs at least a bachelor's. What about a supervisor or a house manager? (yes hours are bad there). every company calls them something different.
Or, if you are very motivated and self driven- they have case managers (not sure what they are called) at Peterson krag which is similar but for emotionally challenged teens (not sure if that is the correct wording)

Case management to be something I'm interested in. Is there a degree or some sort of specialized certificate I need to get to do that since I don't have a Masters?

I'm also open to doing something that might not be exactly what I'm doing now to a degree but something where I can get a job that is based upon the job I have done for the last year and a half which is working with those with developmental disabilities.

There are a few positions at PK that you would most likely qualify for without any certification. i know one level doesnt need a bachelors even? (i believe it's called respite?). check out their website they have a lot of stuff listed- they are in smithtown/huntington/coram/ a few other places. from what i know they pay pretty well but take a while to reimburse for travel, etc.

Right now regs with the state and OPWDD have changed to prepare for the full managed care role out effect July 2015 so right now some places may not consider you with a bachelor in fine arts most are looking for that psych/ health care background- min 20 credits. Now case management in this field usually is an msc position. Once managed care is fully rolled out most of these positions will be eliminated. I would look towards the mental health field those service coordination positions will continue however require a degree more closely related to psych social work or health. Let me know if you have any more questions I have worked in the field for a long time in multiple position.

I'm interested in making more than 25k. I feel grossly underpaid. Any ideas on what I can do?

Um... I would likely go back to school for what your interested in. The field itself is grossly underpaid I could make double what I make now doing the same job privately.

Whatever is available on LI and in demand would be great. Working in NYC isn't an option at this point. I just want to break into the 30k range. Maybe even 40k. I work as a 1:1 Direct support professional and I've been working here since August 2013.

Have you looked into residential or Day Services management? I know agencies that managers (residential) start in the 40's. Day services usually less.

Although the experience you've had for over a year is great, unfortunately without a Bachelors or even Masters in the social work/psych/mental health field I don't know how many options you'll have to get you to where you want to be salary wise.
