Loudness of Fire Station?
Do all fire stations still blow their whistles at set times? Is a couple blocks away very loud? The distance of a particular house is .2 miles from the Wantagh train station. If the whistle goes off at a certain time, like noon, 5pm or 6pm every night, I'll try to go listen. Thanks!
ETA: in response to my other post about road noise, a few posters mentioned fire stations being loud. Just figured I should check out the volume since the station is a couple blocks away. I don't think it will be a deal breaker.

Re: Loudness of Fire Station?
Our apartment when we first got married was across the street from a firehouse that had a 6pm whistle, it was very very loud , but we were ok with it and it would not have been a deal breaker if we were looking to buy in that area.
Our house is now about 4 blocks from a different firehouse and we can hear the 6 pm whistle but it is not "hit the deck" loud. If there is a fire or a real emergency it does go off in the middle of the night but it doesn't bother us.

Re: Loudness of Fire Station?
I grew up not far from a firehouse and we had the whistle at noon and 6pm. We actually used it as when to come home. Summers you came home at the noon one for lunch and the 6 one for dinner. Will never forget it and loved it

You get used to it I never realized how many times fire trucks are deployed until living right near one... Now the sound is comforting

Loudness of Fire Station?
Ours does the noon and for fires. Its less than a 1/4 mile away and I hear it....does it bother me no.
I used to have an apt that was almost across the street from the one in Northport and it could shake the house....I got used to it.

Re: Loudness of Fire Station?
My parents are over a mile away from the local fire department and there are some days where you can hear the alarm and that also goes for the train. My in laws are one block from another fire station and you cannot hear it. We are about 1/4 miles from the fire station and we can't hear it.

Is it a main station or a substation? We have substation in our neighborhood and it doesn't blow the noon or 6pm whistle. It also only blows the whistle if it's a call for our station, not the main station so it hardly ever happens. We are several blocks away. It doesn't bother me at all.
