Kindergartener & Zippers / Snaps

DS is almost 5 and will going into K in September. Right now, he wears the pull-on jeans from Old Navy (which are awesome, btw) but I see they discontinue them with the next size up.

Are most K students able to master zippers and snaps by the start of school?

Gymboree jeans and pants have faux zippers. I think by age six kids can master it.

My DD has mostly pull-up type pants. She has on pair from crazy8 with what I thought was a snap but it's a buckle type thingy. I thought she would have trouble but she practiced a few times and got it. She can do snaps but I honestly think at school she just pulls them down with out unsnapping since they're loose and who has time to unsnap? lol

I think most are still learning. Her teacher always includes in her packets to have the kids practice putting on their jackets and zippering up.

DS is in kindergarten and never uses his zipper or buttons. Maybe bc he's thin or pretty much bc the jeans he has are stretchy with the adjustment straps on the inside. Either way he pulls them down and up. No button or zipper.

He also goes to an OT for low muscle tone so he does work on the little things to strengthen his hands. I just never thought about it bc he never opens or unzips.

Well our school asks parents to make sure they can do it themselves by K. Those who indicated on the self help form at the screening that their kids could not were asked to work on it. I think parents dress accordingly (those who can wear them, those who can't wear things they can pull down. My older one had fine motor deficits but could do it by K. My younger has been doing it for since 3. Just make sure whatever you send your child in they can get it on or off, then there is no stress. Most of the girl wear leggings anyway so that solves most of the issues.

My son is in K and knows how to do zippers and snaps (was able to zip his own jacket when he started, etc.).

However, I send him in track pants/sweat pants most days to make it easier on him (to deal with bathroom, etc.). Plus, they are comfortable and that's what most kids seem to prefer/wear (track pants, long sleeved t-shirts, sports jerseys, etc.).

My son can zipper his own coat and he can do snaps. He's not too strong with buttons, only because he wont wear anything with them, so no practice.

However, he wont wear jeans to school. Sweats and wind pants only. No buttons, no zippers. He refuses.

I found a few nice pair of corduroys and jeans on Kohls' website with elastic waste bands. He'll wear those for special occasions. They go up to size 7X, which is bigger than size 7 from Carters and Osh Kosh.

My son can handle the zipper/snap on his jeans ........but honestly? He VERY rarely wears jeans - he's all about the windpants, pull on cargos etc. - they are more comfortable.

.
DS is in Pre-K and is thin and he usually pulls them up and down without unbuttoning or zippering. His jeans are all from the gap and the "button" is actually a tab and he learned to do it all on his own. His pre-k is big on being able to "dress" yourself including zippering and buttoning so maybe they helped teach him. regardless I am glad I stopped getting the notes home about practicing with him.

Re: Kindergartener & Zippers / Snaps

I would not send a child to school wearing zippers, buttons, or snaps unless I knew for sure that they could handle it themselves as the teachers are NOT allowed to help a child with such things.

Re: Kindergartener & Zippers / Snaps

My son will be 5 in March, starting K in Sept. He is currently in PreK and can master zippers on pants and jackets. With that being said he prefers his sweatpants on daily basis, he's comfortable and makes going to the bathroom a breeze. Here and there he will wear jeans, but its never his first choice.
And as the above poster said, best if they wear things they can handle. Teachers are not allowed to help them.
