I wouldn't do anything until after the anatomy scan. Buy buy baby. They had more of the brands I liked and more selection that I liked. Their customer service is really good too for returns, etc.

How many weeks ...
I registered when I found out the gender which was around 20 weeks.
I registered at Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us. Both places have the same stuff but different patterns. So I just went with what I liked and tried to even out the small things like bottles, towels, onesies - at both places.

How many weeks ...
Sometime after the first trimester and NT scan. We wanted everything gender neutral so I didn't wait for the anatomy scan. Also, I found that registering is a process so I am glad I started early. It's tough to do it all in one day! And, I updated my registery A LOT due to new research, reviews, hand-me-downs received etc.

This. We went 2 weeks after our a/s, I think I was 24 weeks along at that point (a/s we had right before 22 weeks). Loved BBB, they had so much to offer and their registry system is super easy.

I will add that I will always wait until after the anatomy scan, not bc of gender (the time I found out gender at 13weeks), but bc I know a couple of people who got bad news at their anatomy scan. It's more out of superstition and peace of mind.

How many weeks ...
We registered at 21-22 weeks after we found out gender. Shower was at 30 weeks so we had to get it done before invites went out.
We registered at BBB and Target. I did a comparison on where things were cheaper and being we had a lot of people from out of town I know BBB isn't available to everyone, we chose Target. I've heard too many horror stories about BRU.

Buy Buy Baby is 10xs better than Babiesrus . The overall customer service alone is night and day. I did a registry but not for a shower or gifts but as a budget of what we need and how much it will cost us.

Re: How many weeks ...
I registered at Buy Buy Baby and Target Baby. I started the registry at about 17-18 weeks for the bigger items and after I found out the sex, I registered for some girly stuff. LOL

Re: How many weeks ...
I registered at around 22 weeks, but we're team green so my stuff is fairly neutral.
We ended up doing registries at Buy Buy Baby, Babies R Us and a small one at Pottery Barn Kids (mostly bedding and other random stuff).
I also created a small registry at Target for myself of just diapers and random baby care things because they give you a $20 gc, and a whole package of free stuff- GOOD stuff (Munchkin Latch bottle, MAM pacifier, free samples, diapers, wipes, coupons,etc.). BBB also gave a bunch of free things (pacifier, formula, samples, coupons, etc.). I registered here mostly because of their coupon and return policies- plus their selection was pretty good. Babies R us is also decent because they offer 10% back on anything purchased off your registry after $300 (before that is 5% back). They did give out a little "welcome bag" as well but there really wasn't much in there aside from some coupons and a couple small samples.
If you can't tell, I'm a sucker for free stuff LOL
All registries have a completion discount. Most of them are 10% (BBB,BRU and PBK) but Target was 15% completion as well and I believe if you have a red card, you can take 5% off on top of that. Not too shabby. Target's return policy is really bad though and they have a crap selection in store.
Best of luck to you!!

I registered at BRU. No BBB near me. I had no problems whatsoever. I prefer BRU to BBB anyway.
I also registered w/ Amazon.

Re: How many weeks ...
I begin registering at 16 weeks with this baby but around 20 with my first. This time around I knew exactly what I needed so it was easier for me. I registered at buy buy baby this time and babries r us the last. I've had good experiences with both
