Crib help?!
Hi Girls,
I am almost in my 3rd trimester and the DH and I have been looking into cribs.
Originally we were going to use a nursery set from a relative... but after reading that it's not a good idea to use a hand me down crib, now I'm nervous to use it?!
We don't want to spend a lot of $ b/c we are renovating our kitchen so we have lots of costs right now.
The DH doesn't think it's a good idea to get a crib made out of pinewood b/c it won't last and will get scratched/damaged... but if we get a set that's not pinewood (crib and dresser) it'll run us over $1000.
Just wondering others' thoughts and opinions about this issue.. and I'm not sure if I should still consider using the hand me down crib? I think it was used by this couple's last child and she's 5 now.
TIA!

Crib help?!
I think your babies furniture is an investment. I bought my DD set so it would grow with her.It cost us almost $2500 for a crib, dresser and hutch. Her bed will turn into a toddler bed and then a full size. Maybe you can scale back something in your kitchen reno to buy good furniture. If not then I would say as long as the hand me down stuff is up to the current safety guidelines then I would use it.

My set is not pinewood, ran well over 1000 and ds still managed to scratch and bang it up. Not to mention the teeth marks from teething. How old is the set you are able to get free? If it is up to standards just use that!!

I think you are fine to use the hand me down crib...just make sure it hasn't been recalled and that it is not a drop side. Other than that it should be fine. My third baby is using the crib I bought for my first child...they are 6 years apart. The crib is perfect!

Mine is not pinewood and its scratched and scratches easily. Its a munire set that cost us 1600 for crib dresser and night stand. The bed converts to a toddler bed then full size bed... If the set you may get meets all safety standards and recalls then i would take it. Furniture gets expensive and its worth it to invest in something nice. But also consider which i didnt even think of... you can buy a crib and buy regular furniture. It doesnt need to be "nursery" furniture. I know most people want a set so colors match. But if you have an eye for mixing and matching that could work too.

The hand me down might be ok. Depends on the features. Pine is soft...I think there are other woods that are a little harder, but not crazy expensive. I got an expensive crib so I'm not much help- I wanted one not made in china. In terms of durability, you have to think about whether you really want to convert the crib to a bedroom set or just use it for a couple years. Also, My set looks same as when we got it, but my DD did not chew on the crib. If she did, I'm sure she would have made scratches.

Crib help?!
IF I could have used a crib from someone else I would have in a sec as long as it was not recalled. We used our crib for less than 2 years and for the money we spent it wasn't with it.

My dds crib is made by Graco and I'm not sure what its made of, but I'm assuming pine since it was under $200. But she's already almost 2.5 years old and there are no scratches and it still looks like new and feels very sturdy. I read in the book Baby Bargains that all cribs sold in the US have to meet certain safety and quality standards, so no matter how inexpensive the crib, it will still be considered safe. Now, if you're planning on converting the crib to a bed for your child to use for years to come, then you might want to spend more, but if you're only planning on using the crib for a few years before switching to a bed, then I don't see the need to spend a ton of money on it.

Have you considered using the other pieces from the nursey set and just buy a new crib. I did this for Dd and it saved us a lot of money. I bought a crib from Bellini that was about $500.

Re: Crib help?!
Ikea makes cheap, sturdy cribs. We have 2 in amazing condition & they convert to toddler beds.
Check out the hand me down, if not recalled, why not?

Crib help?!
How old is the hand me down? We're using a crib from 2010 for DS2 and it's fine. I wouldn't use a crib from 1982 (though my mil has DH's crib and offered it for both of my kids...). Also, try Behrs clearance section. We got DS2's dresser there right out of the box for $500 when it was originally $1300. It was so hard to match the hand me down crib- only really high end places make things in natural wood and they're few and far between since it's out of style. The clearance section at Behrs had so many options- it's worth a shot!

That's fine. I'd use it & save the $$! DS is 5 & I wouldn't hesitate in using his crib for another baby!

Crib help?!
Use the hand me down (obv as long as it's up to current safety standards). Save the money for now, you can use it for a grown up bedroom set in the future. Most cribs get ruined (scratched, chipped, chewed, etc.) anyway.

Just checked, Ikea cribs are beech and birch (depending on the one you get). Both are hard woods. We have the beech one & it is a great crib. Doesn't hurt that they start at $69.
I love Ikea for kid's furniture. I was silly & bought a fancy crib for DS... it really isn't any better. It does convert to a full sized bed, but a bedroom set for an adult doesn't cost that much more (maybe costs less).
Since then, I've bought their kitchen (kid's favorite toy), and table & chairs all from Ikea.

Re: Crib help?!
DS's convertible crib/dresser/hutch set is almost 12 years old now. Made of pine, and still looks almost brand-new. Very few marks on it. He wasn't a biter, so he didn't really damage it.
