My DH is going to be godfather to our niece today. He bought her a $600+ diamond cross. Are we expected to give a monetary gift as well? I would assume no. But if we are, how much is appropriate?

Re: Quick replies needed
I agree...the cross is more than enough. I would not give an additional $300.00.

The cross is more than enough. But if you have if you have the money and he wants to give something maybe $100. My bro and SIL were godparents for my dd and they got her outfit, her cross, and gave her a check. I did not expect it.

That sounds insane to me. I would have spent $300 total. If you're comfortable with it though, go for it.

Absolutely super generous!
If he wants to give money, give her a savings bond on her birthday.

See... I'm in the minority here. I'd give money as well. The cross is lovely but the money spent on it can be $100 or $600 it makes no difference. It is the style and art of the cross itself (I have a thing for crosses) that really 'makes it' special or appropriate.
The monetary gift on the side would be a natural for me. We gave my husband's sister a $1000 necklace that was a rectangle curved shape of plat with diamond encrusted heart imprinted in its center as a graduation gift (high school mind you). I thought it fit her, her personality and what we felt she meant to us. We still gave her $100 on the side. Because she'll never know what that necklace was worth and it's price tag is meaningless compared to how it fits her from us.
She still wears it LOL (she's long since graduated college at this point)
So if he wants to give $300 and you can afford it, I'd say sure why not?
