I'm randomly craving it! Is it bad to drink because of the food coloring? That stuff makes me nervous to have while preggo!

I'm in the minority here because we have had this conversation many times on this board before, but I worked in the ice cream business for many years and I would not have the shake because of the soft serve. To me, 9 months without soft serve is doable. It's just not worth the risk. Even the cleanest places that do everything right get incidents when it goes sour or something is wrong. Last year I can't tell you how many store owners in our franchise complained about a bad case of soft serve coming from our suppliers. Or other things can happen. We only had one incident last season but the product wasn't moving fast enough and it went bad faster then our cleaning cycle.

To be honest, its such a minor issue normally that the health department doesn't worry about it all to much. That is why ice cream only stores are low on the priority list for health department workers. For most people bad soft serve would have minor consequences, but for us preggos it can be bad.

Just to put it in perspective, how I feel about this, soft serve is just about my favorite thing in the world and I served it daily for my whole first trimester… and NEVER EVER ate it.

As for the food coloring, I am not really sure what they use to color the Shamrock Shake, it probably depends on what dye is used.

maybe u can try making your own version at home? buy some mint chocolate chip hard ice cream and make your own shake at home? I just bought some choc ice cream and plan on doing the same. but I did cave and have a choc shake a few weeks ago from a fast food place. theirs compare to carvel so I just had to have it.

I had one a couple of times with my first pregnancy and she turned out just fine.

I had one last week. I thought it was gross lol but if I didn't, I'd probably have one again. These kinds of things don't bother me though.

There's no dye in it but I had a frosty last night... and it was delicious!

I ate soft serve and cold cuts like they were going out of style but I read an article last year about those Shamrock shakes and they are ladden with chemicals.

read this..it has over 50 ingredients!

Ok thanks ladies! I'm no longer craving it lol!! Not worth the risk. That's a good idea about making my own shake I think I'll do that and it'll prob taste better too!

My kids love them and I think they're delicious! lol I would never buy it for myself, but I definitely steal sips of theirs. I also eat soft serve ice cream..

I love them and drank them A lot with DS and I have had them twice this time around. A PP seemed to have a lot of knowledge on the topic but, FWIW, I happen to be friends with an owner of McDonalds. He told me they are required to clean the machines constantly by the franchise and they are checked up on by corporate for compliance frequently and randomly so they don't mess around with cleaning the machines.

As for the ingredients... Come on! Is anyone really going to McDonalds for a healthy snack? I think we can all agree that when you make a decision to eat at McDonalds, it's not because you feel it's the most nutritionally sound place. For Christ's sake, if you mention having a kid's bday party there on the parenting board, the reaction is like you threw out the idea of having a kiddie party at the Spam manufacturing plant.

If you are too freaked out and are seriously craving one, I bought Turkey Hill Extreme Junior mint stuffed ice cream. You can mix that with milk for a shake and it would probably be just as good.
