How exactly do you order kitchen cabinets?

How exactly do you order kitchen cabinets?
Do you just go to a place like Consumers and give them the measurements and general layout, and they tell you what you can fit? I guess I am asking how involved you need to be in the specific number of cabinets and amount of countertops. I assume you order your appliances first so you know the exact measurements for those? I am so confused about this process.

We used a cabinetmaker. He came here and took measurements and designed the layout.

It varies. If it's 100% DIY, you take your measurements, then find out the cabinet sizes available (Ikea, HD and Lowes for example), and you figure out the layout that works best for you. Appliances are standard sizes.
You can go to HD and sit down with someone on staff there, and they will take your preliminary measurements, and work with you on a layout, using their stock cabinets.
If you go to a custom cabinetmaker, they will take exact measurements, and design a layout with you that works for what you want, and not waste a single inch of space.

How exactly do you order kitchen cabinets?
I used consumers and had the basic dimensions for my kitchen. We did the design with them and then they send out someone to measure (for Free). We had out appliances picked out and countertops do not get measured until the cabinets are in. They come and do a template.

How exactly do you order kitchen cabinets?
Most kitchen places will sit with you and do a layout plan for free - Lowes, HD, Ikea, and even custom kitchen designers. You need to know the rough measurements of the space you have to work with and what appliances, or at least their sizes, so that the plan can be based on them. They will also give you an idea what that plan will cost and tell you what is included and what is not.
Once you decide who you want to use, the one you chose will send someone to take exact measurements.
I had several places do plans for me. Each was different so there was food for thought.
