Summer question-CPSE

My twins are in a half day program they started in January through CPSE 12:1:2 (2 different classes). Their teachers are recommending full day in the fall and summer for them.

I spoke to one of my son's teachers today and she said that after the Easter break she will have enough to write it all up (show regression and that he will have been in the program long enough at the point). She said most likely the district meeting would probably happen in May/June. She said that might be late for summer services but she doesn't know. She felt pretty confident he would definitely get full day for fall. They will have a lot of openings in their school (although I'm thinking of putting them in another school-assuming there are openings).

She said summer is more difficult to qualify for but she is strongly recommending it for my son. My question is what has everyone's experiences been getting summer services and/or switching schools (although if they get summer I will probably just keep them there because I doubt there will be open spots anywhere)?

I know summer can be pretty difficult to get. My fear is that if they are regressing now, what is going to happen over those 2+ months??? I don't even know where I could put them. I would love to put them in some sort of program even just part time during summer but I feel like someplace that is not special needs won't be qualified to handle them. My kids can be a handful and have lots of trouble listening and need constant redirection.

Otherwise, they are with my in-laws and just spoiled to death while we are at work. Just trying to figure out what to do and curious if anyone else has gone through this? I'm in Queens if that matters.

ETA: She also asked if I was taking them to a developmental ped because she could use that also in the report. I told her I have an appointment with Cohen's in July (soonest I could get) which would obviously be too late for the report. So she said that she will just include we have concerns as well and are taking him to a developmental ped. I wish these appts didn't take forever to get!Chat Icon

Summer question-CPSE

It was explained to me that they need to document a certain amount of regression over a break to qualify for summer. Our school used Christmas break since it was so long. But we have problems after a weekend. I would not try to change or increase services for summer. The summer is not for progress it is only to prevent regression . Even with summer services we'll be off almost a month. It was a fairly easy process for us to get summer services. They applied to decrease service for the summer but the school district kept everything in place for him with no changes. He hadn't shown enough progress in 2 years to decrease service.

Re: Summer question-CPSE

From my experience and that of moms I have spoken to, the approval of services for summer often depends on the district and the level of impairment of the child. When my DS was in preschool, the teacher told me that some of the districts were stricter with documentation of regression than others. As budgets get tighter, I have heard that they are requiring more justification for summer services than in the past. I do know one family that was approved for the full day class, but not related services - the child received speech during the school year, but didn't get it for summer.

Full day spots are hard to come by in most of the schools. I think it's easier to get them if the child is in a 12 vs. a 6, but I think in general they aren't easy to get for the academic year. If you are thinking of moving, I would call around now to get an idea of availability for the fall.
