Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
Am I opening up a can of worms? I have old silver filling and you can only see when I make big smile but I am getting married in one month. I have appointment but scared what if something goes wrong. Wondering if this was simple procedure. The silver filling is old so did coloring the back tooth and starting to show the silver on side of tooth.

I have a few silver ones. My dentist said the wouldn't take them out unless there was a reason for it. Mine are far back and you can't see them unless you were looking in my mouth.
I'd leave it unless it was falling out or something.

I did, both fillings and a crown. So happy I did. Wasn't a big deal to me.

Re: Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
I want to get this done but I'm scared about whether it's safer to leave the gross mercury ones in there & not disturb them, or if it's safer to get them out but can removing them cause more problems? (like you know how they say it's safer to leave asbestos if it's not flaking than to disturb it which is how it gets everywhere & becomes harmful-- is it the same with the mercury?). So this is my fear because my mouth is full of fillings. If DS needs fillings he will be getting the white ones from the get go because they're safer.

Be careful-as far as I was aware the porcelain fillings don't give as much as the silver ones, so if it's a large filling the white ones can become painful. My sister had to get a cavity filled in a molar and insisted on the white filling..she quickly went back to have it switched out because it was so painful

This is the exact reason my dentist told me to leave mine alone. They are far back so they don't bother me at all.

Re: Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
You may be opening a can of worms. The filling may be deeper than the original, may start to cause sensitivity, may even involve the nerve and potentially a root canal/crown. Or, you could be fine. A lot of it would depend on how deep the original filling to replace is.

White fillings hurt.
Removing will most likely cause issues.

I replaced all of my silver filling with porcelain (and there were many ) with no issues at all.

Re: Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
I had this done to a giant slab of a silver filling because it caused a crack in my tooth (so it needed to be replaced). It was in the back of my mouth, but I am so, so happy that I got it replaced. I don't feel as self-conscious as I did beforehand.

I had a silver replaced with white. It was a deep cavity. I should have left it alone!! The tooth developed sensitivity and a crack in it. I'll need a crown at some point. Dont fix what's not broken. I've seen your smile and teeth. They are gorgeous!!!

I would leave alone. My teeth do not do well with white fillings. Very painful.

I used to have many silver fillings. My dentist took all of them out and replaced with white ones 3 years ago. No problems here.

Re: Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
My dentist said the white does not hold up like the mercury. So for larger fillings and old cavities, leave mercury alone and even if it has to be replaced (falls out), replace with mercury (which I did).

This.
I had some white ones that were done less than years back and they had to be replaced.

Re: Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
The white filling is not porcelain. It's composite
Amalgam or the silver is stronger but composite would hold up fine
Now in saying that for me I wouldn't replace unless somethig wrong with the tooth bc you never know the condition of the tooth once you remove all the silver filling

I had mine replaced. They put the composite in and it was fine. Nothing major at all very low key thing. It was years and years ago and they said it was because insurance (at the time) covered the composite so why not go with a more natural color? And I did.
Never had an issue.
Ironically I had issue with the silver one in the back that I didn't replace because who cares, can't see it... HORRIBLE issues. Finally ended up with a root canal (not by same doc) that went bad as well and now that root canal left part of my nerve with a paper cut on it and a fractured tooth that slides up against it and the whole thing needs to be removed! Ugh! been putting it off for years due to the cost.
My gold crown is fine My other silvers are ok All my composites are fine

I had them all replaced. No problems, no pain, no regrets! If the silver filling was large, I had it replaced with a porcelain on-lay to give it more stability.

Has anyone had a silver filling taken out and replace with white?
Thank You...I have the appointment today and I am VERY conflicted. They took xrays just hoping it doesn't have negative affect. It is the last tooth in my wide smile and if I wasn't getting married I may not have done it but it has bothered me for along time. I can see it in black and white photos more. I keep almost cancelling the appointment but I think it would look so much better, but I don't have the best of luck a lot of the time.

I am assuming with the xray they can see how deep the cavity was?
