Sorry I can't help. I haven't been the owner of puppy since I was a teen...I can't wait for that day though. Wishing you the best of luck. Please post some pictures!

Oh how cute!! Chat Icon

Its been 7 years since I've had a pup.. DH and I went mostly on instinct and our Vet's suggestions... and watching a lot of Dog 101 and Ceasar Milan. But I've had a dog my entire life so I've been through the puppy stages many times.

My only suggestion is stick with your gut and do what feels natural to you. When we got our current pups, DH and I hadn't had "puppies" in about 13 years and we basically just 'winged' it .. and they turned out just fine (IMO! Chat Icon)

Puppies can be trying...exhausting... but so fun and funny and loving and adorable! Enjoy this time cause it goes by so quick!!
Good Luck!

just make sure you vac, at 4 week intervals and do not go past 4 weeks, bc all shots will have to start over costing you more $ Rabies can be given at 16 weeks but not really earlier.

Tips: only use one worded commands, sit for site, down= lie down, stay etc. don't say "sit down" too confusing for dogs. I love training dogs. Have fun and enjoy, you puppies personality has not shown itself to yo fully yet, by 8-12 months you will know.
try holding you puppy on her back, the way they handle this says a lot about the dog
very cute puppy

Re: I'm a new owner of an 8 week old puppy!

Interesting about the on the back.

We definitly plan on seeing the vet regularly. She had her 1st shots & goes again in 3 weeks.

I definitly feel like I have a 3rd child!!!!! It's like a newborn & potty training toddler in 1!!!!!! So with a 7 & 4 1/2 year old I am exhausted!

You do have a third child but he/she will never leave for college, marriage, no braces but they are dependents for least 12 or more years, they will never feed themselves or cleanup

if you puppy stays quietly on her back while being held means a more passive personality, if they fight it and struggle more dominate

OMG I want a puppy or baby

I will say I got my last day when she was about 1 yr old, huge difference no potty training, teething etc...

A D O R A B L E !

congrats a new puppy mommy and dad!

and yes .. you have a new baby... just w fur ... your fur baby :)

well...a few things i have are:

Crate train early -- with patience, they learn

Shots -- try Petco each saturday. The have the same quality shots as the vet and MUCH cheaper. You can give the vet the copy of the shots for the records

Insurance -- ASPCA has reasonable insurance should your pup ..who will be an adult one day , will need surgery or something.

Enjoy !!!

Re: I'm a new owner of an 8 week old puppy!

Great tips!

I can't beleive she'll be almost 10 weeks & has gotten so big in such a short time of having her!

She's doing really great, still working on the pee in the house. Luckily we are hardwood & stone floors, & she only has access to 2 rooms.

We wanted to give her time out of the crate while we are with her, any tips on preventing the accidents. Sometimes she goes to the back door, occasionally hits her potty bell, but sometimes just goes. Any tips?

its important you watch her like you would with you kids for clues as to when she needs to go. I assume you are taking her in the yard? she should go out often and use a key word once she goes. when she poops /urinates say good *** whatever word you like and praise her. This is also how you train to go on demand. she will associate the praise along with the "magic" word as a good thing.

Yes, always out the backdoor. As soon as we tak her out of the crate, we don't stop LOL.
We use the word "do business". And always praise.

It really is like when I watched my DDs like a hawk.

I guess I wonder am I crating too little? Like right now she's sleeping at my feet (it's daytime). Should I move her to the crate?

I never crated a dog while I was home with it.

I would just take her out hourly!

if she is good and sleeping by your feet its ok, I only put my dog in when I left the house only because my grandmother lived with me and I was afraid she would fall over the dog.

you cant crate too little just like you cant pick up (too much) a 4 week old human when crying. You are doing a GREAT job, just breath and try and enjoy this time with her :)

I do pretty much let her sleep out when I'm near. I really only crate her at bedtime, if I'm out (so far 2 1/2hr has been max), during bath time of my girls.

Every once in a while I'll take her out & within 15 min she has an accident. What gives?? It's funny, when it's just me with her, no accidents. When I rely on others in the house... accident Chat Icon

I am really starting to learn her personality & how to deal with her mouthy times, etc. I haven't had a dog since I was 5....so this is very new!
Thank you for helping with all my questions!!! I
This week I taught her sit & paw.
Next is come, stay, leave it!
