She's here! unplanned home birth story

So my team green baby arrived at 4am on Memorial day 5/25 and is a girl!
Autumn Elizabeth was birthed in my living room after an unexpectedly fast labor (that I thought was prodromal labor till it wasn't) at 40 + 6 days.
The night before I had strong, regular contractions from 10pm - 7am that never got closer then 7 minutes apart and fizzled out by the morning ( but couldn't sleep through them). I spent the next day at the beach and went food shopping with a few scattered contractions. That night I went to sleep w/ no contractions but woke up again at midnight to what I thought was the same deal of prodromal labor. Contractions were 7- 10 minutes apart till 2:30am when they became suddenly unbearable . i called my doula and woke my DH to say it was time to go to the hospital to get checked(still in denial that it was real labor). within 30 minutes I felt like I had to push and contractions were 3-4 minutes apart. I started screaming to call 911 and see where the doula was because I didn't know if there was a baby coming or I just had to poop and if I would make it to the car anymore. The doula (who was also a midwife) opened the door at 3:53 and caught my baby girl at 3:59. We are all doing amazingly well and never needed 911 thankfully. In the end my birth experience was amazing and recovery has been ok so far! DS is so excited to be a big brother

Wow....how amazing! One of my fears is going into labor quickly and not making it to the hospital especially since this is not my first.

First of all, congrats!

Second, you lived my worst nightmare right now. I have like 90 questions for you. How were you so collected? Did you both end up going to the hospital? Who cleaned your living room after? I perseverate on this scenario every day. You are amazing in my book.

Absolutely insane!! I can't even imagine that scenario. I feel like I would have been paranoid and rushing to hospital that first night. I'm so impressed that you and your husband were able to handle this as well as you did. Congratulations on your little girl, you'll have quite a story to tell her down the road. Chat Icon I hope for quick healing!!

This is long but if you want different or more TMI details you can FM me (so I don't scar anyone)

Haha to answer some of the questions. Background: My first DS I had in the hospital 12 hours after I was admitted which was about 28 hours after my labor started. We had an "unmedicated birth" after taking bradley classes but it was very very tough and traumatic for me and I screamed a lot and felt like i was completely out of control For this one we decided that if I was going to try unmedicated again we would save the money on trying a different type of class and invest in a Doula instead (who happens to be a midwife as well though we were NOT interested in home birth as the closest hospital is 20 minutes away and I didn't want to risk anything if there was a complication) This was obviously the best decision in the world.

So, I guess I was expecting the progression of my labor to go like my first and it didn't. I don't think there would have been anything wrong with going to the hospital that first night but since I was interested in an unmedicated birth I didn't want to "jump the gun" and was waiting for contractions to get longer/stronger/closer together then 7 minutes. Also I didn't have the bleeding like I had when I was in labor with my first so I figured it was just false labor. IF medication (like epidural/augmentation w/ pitocin etc) was something I was ok with then again going the first night would have been fine. They would have either admitted me and started those meds or just sent me home to come back when real labor had started. Since I was trying to avoid those types of interventions I decided to wait it out and as I said the next day I really felt ok.

So Night of actual labor I Was calm initially because again I expected if it was going to turn into real labor I would have plenty of time and if not it would fizzle out again. I called the doula and told her to take her time but I would feel better if she came to the house to start supporting me (in case it became "real labor" I was NOT calm and collected when the contractions suddenly became totally unmanagemeable within 10 minutes of phoning the doula and were 3-4 minutes apart w/ no doula yet to arrive and my husband sleeping. My neighbor came over to watch our 3 yo DS and by that point I was screaming to call the doula and 911 to see who could get to me first because I felt like pushing. The doula was on the phone with my husband and 2 minutes away from the house giving him directions on how to get me into a better position. She literally walked in and I was crowning. She went into midwife mode and was a totally calming presence and talked me through delivery. She was AMAZING and a godsend. My baby girl came out in 3 pushes and I had a tiny tear (no episiotomy this time) which she repaired with 2 stitches. Because she was also a midwife she had literally anything and everything she would need to deliver a baby in her car. She also had one of the other midwifes come over to assist her. She had Lidocaine, suture, meds for me and or the baby if needed, vitamin k injection/eye ointment etc. We would have had the option to go to the hospital at that point for after care but decided since all was well with me and the baby we would avoid the hassle of driving 30 minutes to the hospital to be admitted for just 2 nights of stress and not sleeping.

The doula turned midwife and her team cleaned everything up. They washed the couch cushion and carpet. My house was literally cleaner when they left then when they came. It was crazy, like nothing had happened 3 hours prior. They got us settled i the bed and helped with feeding, started laundry for us, had typical peri bottle, chuck pads, and even came back with breakfast hehe. They came to my house the next day to check me and the baby and will be coming back on day 3, 7, 3 weeks for follow up visits since we essentially changed over to a home birth protocol. Again since everyone was happy and healthy it worked out better then I could have ever imagined.

So in the end I guess the take home message is if (especially if its your 2nd or more baby) getting meds is a priority for you and or induction isn't an issue for you then go to the hospital if and when you feel like labor is really happening and the worst that happens is they send you home. If you are trying to achieve a natural/unmedicated birth but still in the hospital don't wait till things are so painful and unmanageable before you say something (again you can always go home and come back again). That and Midwifes are amazing :) (as are supportive neighbors hehe)

Good luck!!
Also know if you are going for an unmedicated birth, you can do it, its ok to scream and be out of control if you are in the hospital or at home- that is how birth is for most people who go unmedicated (despite the calm orgasmic images they portray in hypnobirthing bradley haha ...that happens to or so I'm told but less commonly hehe)
