Solar

Anyone have it?

DH is looking into it now and we're on the fence. I believe he's looking into Vivint Solar or Solar City. It seems like it's too good to be true. There's also a 20 year contract.

Just wondering if anyone has it and if so, your thoughts on it.

Thanks!

We have it, but we bought our house with it, so I can't help much with the installation. But I will say, our electric bills are super low, even when we run the CAC 24/7. We always produce more electricity than we use so we bank credits and once a year we get a refund from PSEG.

We are getting our solar installed in a few weeks. We used Sunation. We are buying our system. The balance will be finance at 3.5% for 15 years. We looked at leasing as well but we felt more comfortable with buying. We hope to pay it off before the 15 years is up.

The only question I would ask is what would happen if you sell your house. Will the ownership get transferred or will you have to pay for the balance of the system. Good luck. I really don't see a downside in it!

I believe if we were to move, they would remove the panels and put them on the new house as long as we were moving to an area that PSEGLI services. I think we would also have the option of transferring it over to the new owners.

Re: Solar

Id recommend Sunation. My friend owns the company, they are a local long island based company. I work with the owner on a charitable board and hes very active in the community. He's a straight shooter and they install panels that you own. No leasing. Very clean installs. I follow his companys facebook page and there are tons of pictures and even drone videos of installs.

No need to worry about moving and what will happen to the panels. I havent done it yet but my friend installed with Sunation and is very happy. I will work with him when we take the plunge.

I had my solar panels installed by SunPower... SuNation before they changed names many years ago. I've had the panels for about 7 years now. I would definitely recommend them.

We used Solar City and bought the panels. In the initial interview I asked what happens if we move and they explained that the new owners would decide if they wanted to take over the contract or not.

Our roof is high and you can't even see the panels looking at the front of our house.

Process was very quick and I am very happy. I love that there is an app to let you know how much energy the panels are generating versus our usage. The panels are connect to the company and they will be informed immediately if there is a problem with one of the panels and which one it is so it can be repaired immediately.

What happens if new owners don't wish to take over the contract? Do you have to pay the balance before you close?

Yup.

That's one of the reasons why I'm not crazy about the idea of leasing the panels.

How much are they to own? If you do the math does it work out that you are still paying less than your electricity bill currently is each month?

Re: Solar

How easy is it to remove them in a situation where the roof needs replacing/repairs?

Also, we spoke to someone who mentioned their energy was not stored in their house so when the power goes out, you don't keep power. Is this true with all?

The panels greatly lengthen the life of the roof. They block the sun's UV rays, and the excess heat, both of which are the major contributors to aging a roof.
The panels are just bolted down, so if you did need to make repairs, you'd have to call the installers and have them dismantle the setup.

Correct, if the power goes out, you lose all power as well. If not, you would be feeding power back to the grid, and all of the technicians working on the poles would get zapped by your electricity. Also, with the way electricity works, you need to have a way of dissipating excess power. There has to be a battery or grid connected for things to work properly.
You can get batteries in your house, but they take up a huge amount of space, cost a lot, and need to be replaced every few years (they are typically just car batteries connected together)

We've had our panels for about 7 years. I think there have been 3 times when we lost power, and most of those times it's because the entire island lost power. Long Island power is pretty reliable, in my experience.

We have solar. We purchased through majestic solar and are very happy. My bills are 10 a month. You will not get that type of saving with vivant. Instead of paying pseg you pay Vivant just at a lower rate. Also what motivation do they have to install the panels well on your roof since they own the panels and you own the roof. There are a lot of bad reviews out there about vivants work

Re: Solar

We bought our panels and used Energy By Choice. They company was so easy to deal with. I highly recommend them. My last two electric bills were less than $12 each and once I pay off the loan (which is less than my monthly electric bill before the panels), I'll just keep paying the hook up fee to PSE&G while the electric rates increase.
